Hello all. New to this Jag and it got stuck in first the other day after doing a beautiful 350 mile drive the day before. I have the special dipstick ordered. Arriving tomorrow. Located the filler tube. For the life of me, I cannot seem to find a answer as to what ATF fluid I should be adding to it? The car has 94,000 miles on it. Yes, I am contemplating a full transmission kit, but I think for now I will top it off and see how she rolls. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.
The original spec for the 722.6 transmission during that era was 236.10. Here is the link to the MB site listing all transmission fluids tested and approved by MB for that spec. I use Ravenol M6 Serie. I believe you can also use the newer 236.14 spec fluids, as I think most of the ones mentioned above probably are. This is a pretty handy tool:
I really think you can find just about anything you need for an X308 XJR HERE. If not, type the question . . . some will even tell you how to break the sound barrier on a drag strip . . . LOL
I have used Shell ATF 134 for over 40K, no slips or hesitation, smooth shifts. When you decide to change the filter and pan seal you may also want to replace the electrical harness bracket. The O rings in the bracket wear out and being plastic it can crack. It's a common leak point but a relatively cheap part.
Thank you all! I ended up using the Valvoline max life. The dipstick came so I fired it up and went for a cruise - albeit a HOT cruise (I undid the AC filler cap right near the Transmission ATF filler tube without realizing what it was and let out all the AC juice). Came home, checked level and it was at the lower of the 2 marks. Added just a bit and it cam to just below the upper "full" mark. Added just a bit more (a bit of the previous bit) and of course it was a little too much - about a 1/" over the upper "full" mark. Not sure what to do... but took it to the local mechanic who filled the AC back up (and we had a good chuckle at my ignorance opening the cap) and unfortunately THAT did not solve my new AC not working problem. So when I take it back to garage in a couple days for him to see if the AC motor stuck, I might ask if he can raise it and let a tiny amount of tranny fluid out. And so it goes... Thank you all for being kind and helpful. My wife and I are very impressed how decent folks are on here. Thank you.
It might have been formulated for the 722.9 but it is otherwise to the new spec called by Mercedes "MB 236.14 sheet". When this formulation came out, it was also made compulsory for the earlier 722.6 by this bulletin:
There is actually no issue with using the ATF that was originally used in the 722.6 (MB 236.10 sheet) but Mercedes preferred to advice using the latest.
These are the MB ATF specs and cross references to other ATF manufacturers:MB 236.10 sheet - ATF 3403, aka 722.6 fluid (MB Part # 001-989-21-03-10)

not sure if they updated the formula or not and I am not familiar with other MB trannys....but 134 should be the OEM spec ATF for this 722.6 tranny.
Shell 134 was not the Jag (nor MB) OEM spec for the 722.6 but the updated formulation, for 722.9 actually, but also recommended for 722.6 transmissions (see the MB-Shell cross references in my previous post). According to the Jag Workshop Manual, Shell ATF 3403 - M115 was the OEM fluid which is equivalent to the MB's first formulation 236.10.
Thank you all for your advice and info. I got the dipstick, checked the temp cold, then hot. And slowly added what had to amount to 1/8 of a quart - if that. Runs and shifts beautifully.
