Default 1999 xjr supercharger....question

My father and I were talking about whether the supercharger on gets better gas mileage or not. Theres a button to press on the center console to turn on/off the supercharger. Anyone know the answer? More air is good for gas mileage right? And you dont have to press the pedal as much you just barely touch it and it hauls *** and then you can let go and coast.

There is no switch to turn the blower on or off?? The supercharger is belt driven by the crank. What switch are you referring to? There is one for the cruise control and another one for Sport mode shifting for the transmission located in the center console.

The supercharger is going to consume more gas than a normally aspirated model. Power is needed to drive the blower. More air means more gas. Air-fuel ratios remain more or less constant so the more air you force into the engine via a blower (supercharger or turbo) the more fuel it's going to consume.

their is a button to turn on and off the supercharger. It is on the center console of my 1999 xjr. I am 100 percent positive on this.

Thanks for answering the question tho. Your answer makes sense

what does the "supercharger on/off" button look like, and where exactly is it? does the supercharger have a clutch similar to an A/C compressor? I would think it needs to operate full time or it would restrict the fuel/air mixture to the engine. I have a 1999 XJR also, so it would be good to know. Margo

If you are 100 percent positive, please post a picture of this switch.

There is no button to switch the supercharger on and off the button your are talking about is the "S" or Sport switch that just changes the shift pattern of the trans

There is no way to turn the supercharger on and off without removing the belt

Having the "S" button off will increase gas mileage

It's all good, we all make mistakes. I make plenty... But remember, you are in here with some Master Technicians (I'm NOT one of them), so be careful about arguing your case and being "positive" about things. We're all learning from these guys for "FREE" and they deserve a lot of respect.

Also remember, if you need parts or work done, these guys deserve the business any time it's possible to give it to them. I have yet to actually buy a part for my XJR, but when I do, I'll definately be hitting them up.
