Default 20" wheels 1998 XJ8 = Tyre Size?

hey all I want to put larger wheels on, a whole 4" larger than my stock 16s I hate. I was going to get 18's but for a mere $70 more I can get 20's.

This is a summer only car, and we have excellent newly paved roads in all areas I travel, so no worries about driving through a pothole minefield. I do not 'race' the car or floor it regularly, I actually am a pretty laid back driver, they tyres won't be stressed much besides very little interstate driving

My wheels (rims/whatever) are 20x8.5 in both offsets of +15 and +35. Which to use, I had seen the XJ8 offset can be in range of +5 to +35? Bolt pattern of course 5x4.75" (120.65mm)

I called the local dealership, they've no clue and cannot comment since it's not a stock option told me to ask tireshop. I just want to know the correct tire sizes available for that wheel size.

Discounttire states my optional tire sizes are:

Plus Zero 235/55-16

Plus One 225/55-17
235/50-17
245/50-17

Plus Two 245/45-18
255/40-18

Plus Three 255/35-19

Plus Four 245/35-20

Now I've read online on many car forums like car domain people having various sizes not listed there for 20". Please help me out guys I don't know much about tyres and would like to purchase asap. I know OEM Index/Speed Rating is 98 (1653lbs) W (168mph) for this car.

I really like the general exclaim UHP (this is a summer only car) 245/40ZR20 at only $110 each on tirerack. Possible to fit? They are 99W

Im guessing anything larger would cause rubbing in the wheel well or what not? All of the super low profile 245/35-20 i'm seeing are only like 95 weight index (1521lbs) rated. Will this be a problem any clue?

(perhaps 18s with a bit beefier tire would be sufficient? 245/45/18)

your fine i was in the same boat.. I recently purchased 20's and I was recommended this tire size.your right any larger and you will exp rubbing not that it wont drive..all you will exp is you wont be able to maneuver as well like making sharp turn. you have 20x8.5 your fine I purchased s3 design 20.9 in the front and 20x10 in the rear.

That sounds nice, thanks for the info. Now I see you have an XJR, I have an XJ8, any clue on the height clearances? Your stock XJR wheel is an 18" while my XJ8 is 16"? On tirerack they give XJR optional tire size of 19" + 20" but for XJ8 They only 17" + 18"?

Im just curious before purchasing. Besides that sounds good. What are your views on the 20" from your stock 18"s on the XJR may i ask? thx

i think there is no difference in reality nothing much changed just wheel options 16 -19 off the assembly line. and maybe suspenion height But i wont see any problems I live in Florida everyone and thier grandpa has rims on their cars and I've seen xjr and xj8 run 20's now most ppl dont know you can run wider tires than 235 ...i personally like the staggered effect.

so what do you run on your XJR and Eclipse just curious? Tyre and Wheels if I may ask? thanks for the great info btw has helped out. Also what about the speedometer? Vast changes in that with the 20s? I'd think that would change somewhat no and im guessing no way to calibrate it? figured id ask : P

also I wanted to ask.. which offset would be better +15 or +35 as the wheels are available in both...both in 5x4.75(120.65mm) thanks for your time!

The calculator in the link will show you what each offset will do.

thanks steve great info on the page. I understand the mechanics of it just any clue if both those offsets (+15 and +35) will require a 'spacer' of some kind on a stock XJ8 or slip right on? I was just curious if anyone here had 20" wheels and what size tyres/wheels were on them.

Also the 20" tyres only have a weight index rating of 95 (1521lbs) which is below the recommended 98 (1653lbs). 132lb per/wheel difference. Will this make a difference? They don't make any 98 rated tires of that size, I suppose because of the crazy thing sidewall of 35? Sorry I just dont know much about tyres wanting to make sure everything is safe rating wise. thx

those are sweet, i was thinking of something like this, I dont want to be called some 'mississippi pimp' though.. I just like the chrome on these rides what can i say lol.

so jimmy you dont think 245/40/20 is possible without raising the car? Im guessing the 245/35/20 is pushing it as is?

Don't go too low!! The weight of my XJ8 used to punish my 20" wheels everytime I hit an unavoidable pothole lol

Default re

I have a 2002 VDP with 245 35 20 VREDESTEIN ULTRAC SESSANTA tires..love the handling, but rough roads are horrible on the thin tires. Im not sure if I have a slight camber issue or slight rubbing on the inside though..just a thought..it is definitely close!
