Thanks to all. I think I nailed it. When I initally got the restricted performance in dash and pulled codes they indicated Ign. coil malfunction, Mis fire, Knock sensor.
If I had taken this to the dealer I really believe he would have showed me the codes and started to replace everything indicated.
Suggesting that I replace at least 4 of the ignition coils, they are all in the same bank and will eventually break down.
So I started by replacing all the spark plugs (40,000 mi on them, and switched two of the ignition coils to see if in fact it was the coil. Problem should have moved from the original position to the new one. Nah now more codes.
To make a long story short before you start to replace the coils make sure to apply dialitic grease to both ends of the spring inside of the coil boot, the top of the spark plug and any other grounging surfaces.
I tried this and wallah check engine light out and no more restricted performance. $3.99 dialetic grease.

I have a 2000 XJ8, the check engine light came on a week ago. Also, occassionally the restricted performance indicator lights up. The CEL is always on. The RPI comes on when I slow down or stop at a red light. If I accelerate, it goes out and the car runs fine. The car runs great on the highway. I have been going back and forth to NY from NH 350 miles each way, twice so far without a problem. I checked the forum and got some good advice. I checked for vacuum leaks (to the best of my ability). I found one hose that was repaired with electrical tape that was not looking good. I taped it up solid. No good. I then cleaned the Mass Air Filter Sensor, no good. I stopped at a foreign car mechanic and he scared the heck out of me. I could actually see the dollar signs in his eyes. He said probably all 4 O2 sensors at $575 a piece plus labor. From what I read the back sensors would probably not be the problem. I just want to know what else I can do before shelling out a bunch of dough that I am sure most of will be unnecessary. Also I tried the Lucas Upper cylinder lubricant fix, no good. Any help would be appreciated. Sorry about asking questions on a reply, but I can't figure out how to start a new thread.
Tjtcp1, you dont mention any codes. If you don't have a reader and have not had the codes read yet, stop into an auto parts store, many of whom offer the sevice free of charge. That will help get a better idea as to what is tripping the CEL & Restricted Performance. That should help you find the source if the problem. Let us know what you find out
