2000 XJ8-l All new problems
Today isnt a very good day for me. I replaced the brake pads today and now the brake pedal is very very spongy, almost going to the floor to stop the car. There are no leaks and all I did was replace the pads. I drive it to work just fine and I get off work and head home. Every now and then I feel it miss. By the time I get home I cannot hit the gas very much at all or it feels like I run over rumble strips or something. The exhaust is smelling like eggs and the check engine light started flashing. It flashed about 15 times and then stopped and then started flashing again right before I pulled in the drive. I only work five miles away, so it wasnt that far. Just sitting in the driveway it has a intermittent miss which is slowly getting worse. It feels like a dead cylinder at times. I ran the codes and it came up P0304, P1313, P1316. What I gathered from this was misfire on cylinder four. It has 79,000 miles on it. I think it needs a tune-up, but the brake thing really stumps me. My thought was the engine slipped a tooth on the chain and that is why it is missing, but my friend says he thinks it needs a tune-up and it is only the plug giving out. I havent messed with it anymore because I dont want to damage the convertors.

Yes indeed. Did you open the bleeder at all when replacing the brakes? Possible to get air in.
Failing that, it is possible you tore the boot and caused an air ingress. Look at all 4 calipers and see if one looks a little wet

After the car sat overnight the brakes were fine. Very weird. When I took the coil off the number 4 plug, I noticed it was wet on the end of the boot. There was water in the spark plug hole. So I blew that out of the hole with compressed air and then pulled the plug. It smelled of gas, but was not black or anything. I noticed the spring from the coil didnt even touch the plug when you put it in there. The spring was just a tad shorter than the others. So I stretched it just abit and put it all back on there and it ran fine. I drove it down the road and let it warm up all the way. The "restricted performance" message went out, but the check engine light stayed on. I drove it to work and the light was still on. I got in it at work and the light either went off while driving or was off to begin with. I looked at it half way home and noticed it was out. I ordered a set of the iridium plugs. I also plan at the same time to take the cam covers off and have a look at the tensioners. Thanks everybody for the help. Maybe I can stop freaking out now.
