Default 2000 XJR dropping out of gear

I have my eye on a 2000 xjr. Drove 5 hrs to test drive it... wow, what an amazing car!

It had one major issue. It would just drop out of gear into neutral without warning. There didn't seem to be any rhyme or reason. It didn't seem to be related to a given gear. I have driven cars that would slip when you accelerated. This didn't seem to be the case. It would pull well, without slipping. Just flips into neutral. It even dropped out while costing downhill. After 30 seconds or so, it would be fine. It did this 4 or 5 times during a 15 minute drive.

I put it in "manual" mode to see if holding it in one gear would work, but no joy. The salesman said that they had flushed the transmission after they got it.

I've done a little investigating on the MB forums and it seems that it could electrical related? Does the Jag version of the 722.6 have the shift module like the MB?

Anyone seen this before? I really *love* this car. I'd like to see what I'm up against if I bought it. If it is the transmission, how much does a rebuild run?

It also had a "failsafe" error (and requisite loss of CC) that had something about coolant level in the message. The dealer took it back and reset the code claiming that they just flushed the system, so it needed to reprogram itself, but it came back. The temp was fine and the car drove fine. Could be a sensor or air pocket?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Is this a Jaguar dealer or a used car dealer? Where is this Jaguar in the World ? The low coolant code is sometimes either three things 1) airport, these cars hold air 2) $25.00 coolant sensor 3) reservoir sensor. These Jags do not come with AT dipsticks so I would be curious to know how much ATF resides? To me it sounds like the center console shifter was replaced and they were unable to figure out how to adjust it. In all honesty get it for half of what they asking for it or tell them to fix it.

Thanks for the reply

This is at a non-Jag dealership in Salt Lake City. They definitely know nothing about jags. They said they flushed the tranny, so I assumed it would be full. Of course, this is the same guy that said there was nothing wrong with it.

Ya, I figure IF I decide to get it, I'll try to low-ball it.. I may just wait.

I just happened to come across this car in a search and was pretty much making an impulse buy. Now that I have started researching Jags through the forum and web I know more about them and I know what to look for. We'll just take our time and find the right one.

1st guess would be low on fluid. after that the very common electrical stuff for the 722.6 conductor plate and/or electrical plug. The J gate shiftier is imho worthless and puts the car in a gear range rather then a gear.
