Good morning everyone i recently purchased a 2001 xj8 engine end when removing one of the valve covers noticed that the secondary chain tensioner is plastic, I can replace them with the metal version from my old engine. Does anyone know if the primary chain tensioner’s are also plastic?

 

YES! I’d highly suggest replacing all the chains, tensioners, guides and exterior seals before installing.

 

Thank you much, I have only about 80000 miles on this engine should the chains still be good?

 

I usually hold a NEW chain and an old chain together looped over my finger to check for 'stretch'.
If the chains are the same and I feel confident about the condition I will consider re-use of the chain.

All other plastic parts I replace.

I would strongly recommend Jaguar OEM engine parts, they might cost more but their warranty is worth it.
