Default 2001 XJR "restricted performance"

hey all,
my check engine light has been on since i bought her a year ago. mechanic ran the codes and said it was an emissions code but not necessary to fix. don't know if it's connected, but the other day i started it as i always do in the a.m. to let it warm up before i leave, it stalled. it started right back up and the check engine light was out. no problems for a couple days, then i started getting the restricted performance indicator on and off maybe 4 times within say 8 miles. any ideas? get a new mechanic?

no, get a code reader, then let us know what codes it's stored.

Whenever a shop says you have codes stored, get them and write them down. You never know when you might need the information.

It needs some Seafoam oil treatment, it's guaranteed to eliminate knocks, check engine lights, suspension noises, inoperable sunroofs and heartburn with headache. I think that's what it says on the bottle anyhow... Pull the codes when you get an opportunity and post 'em up.

all,
Thanks for all the help. he has a reader that reads jags, not "the" jag reader though. unfortunately i didn't see this before i took it to him so i didn't actually get the codes, he did say the two he was getting was "it was running rich" and "small leak in emmisions" he "smoked" the system before, but couldn't find the leak, he still thinks it's not a problem, and that's the check engine light. for the running rich causing the RP, after checking a few things he reset the system and monitored it, drove it at a concistant 40mph for 10 minutes, and it hasn't come back on. i think i did take seafoam after a great cheesteak once. he suggested "techron" and shell gas ( i had just put Kroger gas in, he said stay away from sheetz also). i know seafoam is good any advantages one way or the other techron vs. seafoam?

Forget the seafoam, and forget the techron. There is no such thing as magic in a bottle.

Go to Autozone, get them to read the codes, write them down and post back here.

Don't depend on memory ... write them down verbatim.
