Unhappy 2001 XJR valve cover gaskets

The left side started leaking a very small leak a couple of days ago, I already have the parts, should I attempt to do it myslef?

I do have some mechanical knowledge and have worked on various cars that I've owned in the past. Is it simple, or should I just pay someone to do it? Does anyone know what the torque specs are?

Replacing the gaskets is a very easy task. Two issues to deal with; you have to remove the oil dip stick tube and mine was a little difficult to get back in and moving the coolant reservoir is required. Don't drain it, just move it out of the way to get to the lower corner bolt.

You may find the spark plug holes full of oil. Cover each of them with a rag and blow the oil out with compressed air or suck it out with a turkey baster with a small tube extension.

Careful of the electrical connections on the coil packs. Old plastic can be brittle.

Don't know torque specs but it is so low that I don't have an inch/lb torque wench. Quarter inch ratchet, two fingers and a thumb. Tightening them too much will only crack the plastic, not seal better.

I would also recommend changing the spark plug seals to prevent oil from filling the holes again. I also learned the hard way to use a premium gasket set (OEM).

Good Luck

Cam cover bolts 9 to 11 N/m (Start with the two in the middle and then the bolt middle bottom then in a circular/opposites pattern with the last bolt being front top)

Remember to use RTV sealant (3mm dia' & 12 mm long) at the two flats on the head (joint between timing cover and the cylinder heasd), cam cover on immediately.

Coil bolts 4 to 6N/mm
Coil cover bolts 4 to 6N/mm

Regards

Gary

Use gasket remover to clean up the gasket mating surfaces.
Do not take out the dipstick as per the manual. Remove the dipstick brace from the cam cover bolt and rotate the dipstick to one side. May require a bit of careful pulling and tugging.
Good time to change plugs and secondary tensioners if plastic bodied.

Thank you all so much, the tensioners have already been replaced with the metal bodied ones, and the plugs were also recently replaced. I am replacing the spark plug seals at the same time.

Both sides took about four hours, mind you this was the very first time for me to work on the engine and I was exploring my way through it all. It is a simple straightforward job though once you figure out what you're doing and what needs to be taken off and what doesn't.

Oh yeah, I'm loving the car specially now after installing the cold air intake and feeling the noticeable power gain. http://www.minagallery.com/jagxp/Jag...e%20intake.htm

9-10 Nm. Remember to unfasten and refasten gradually and equally on all bolts. "loosen (tighten) them evenly, in stages" from the manual.
