2003 xj8 performance restriction??
I just got this error on the dash today and I’m about to make a 550 mile trip. What does this mean and what should I do, or what could I do? No jag dealer anywhere close to me. Thanks!
Get obd code reader. And check the fuel pressure it might be the fuel pump
I just changed a bad ignition coil - easy. Same error message. Probably a simple fix.
The Restricted Performance message could be the result of any number of things. It should be accompanied by the check engine light, so start there. Randomly replacing bits until you get lucky will cost a lot of money and take a lot of time, and is not the way to go.
If you don't have an OBD reader and you're close to an auto parts store (Advance, Auto Zone, etc) go in and have them read the codes. It's free, and will at least point you in the general direction. You might also consider buying a reader if you don't have one and intend to do some or all of your own repair work. It will pay for itself many times over. Get one that has software specifically set up for Jaguar. Standard off-the-shelf units like you get at an auto parts store will read generic powertrain codes, but won't be able to talk to all the other modules (16 in my 2000 XJ8) in a Jag. Lots of us on this forum are using the iCarsoft i930. It's reasonably-priced and I've found it to be very useful. I also have an older Innova, but it can't talk to anything but the powertrain module (ECM).
Good luck.
By the way, Restricted Performance allows the car to be driven but engages a hard rev limiter at 3000 rpm. Last night I was out on the interstate doing 85 mph, and the tach read about 2700... Which is by no means an endorsement to continue driving the car and ignore the problem. Just stating that the Restricted Performance condition by itself doesn't leave you stranded. What caused the message in the first place, however, might so get it taken care of.
