2003 xj8 vanden plas no 3rd
Hi folks got a question? my car shifts effortlessly when in D...... but when i use J gate shifter i have no 3rd gear goes from 4th into 2nd skips right buy 3rd.... could any one direct me on where to start looking? love this site lots of info i looked around but could find a similar thread thanks so much in advance
The J-Gate is a cable control that activates switches rather than selecting gears. Park, Reverse, Neutral and Drive each have a micro-switch that sends a signal to the Transmission Control Module indicating the shift position. When shifting the J-Gate over to the manual a rotary switch is engaged and tells the TCM the selector shift position.
If when driven in the D (drive) position and all gears operate normally when pulling from a stopped position the most likely problem is a defect in the rotary switch. The rotary switch won't affect your normal operations only the manual shifting operations.
Thank you so much for advice sounds solid. Now is rotary switch inside where j gate is located? And would you know if it’s an expensive part? And for any one interested I just put new Michelin x touring tires on plus bilstein comfort ride shocks on a 2003 xj8 200.000 km on car. Now it drives like it should worth the investment
