2003 XJR Transmission Fluid Change
Gearing up to change transmission fluid on my XJR and scoured the intertubes for helpful information. Found the howto, the factory instructions, and a bunch of helpful threads. Thought I would add to that with some part numbers:
Transmission is a Mercedes 722.6, aka W5A-580, sometimes referred to as NAG1 or "large NAG."
Automatic Transmission Fluid.
Official/original fluid is Shell ATF 3403 - M115
Mercedes spec is 236.10
Jaguar part number is JLM20292
Alternative fluid sources include:
o Febi
o Fuchs
o Pentosin ATF1 / ATF1 LV
Torque Converter Drain Plug And Sealing Washer.
*not needed* after 2000, maybe earlier
Transmission Oil Pan Drain Plug And Sealing Washer

Today I found the best overall price for everything, including 10L of ATF1 LV at eeuroparts at $151. Everything is Mercedes except the filter & seal (Mann) and the connector adapter ("OE"). The tool is sourced from Amazon for $11. Other places I looked included autohausaz, ecstuning, and rmeuropean. Everyone was close - within $20. I went with eeuroparts because a) I have a relationship with them, and b) they were the only ones who carried the ATF1 LV fluid - everyone else carried Fuchs or Febi.

It's most important to get the OE Mercedes connector ... my memory is that Fuchs was the OE supplier back in the 90's ... the .10 in NLA from MB .. and by all accounts no longer produced.
Mann made the filters -- and the last set I bought for one of my MB's was still European manufacturer. Mann is now making aftermarket parts elsewhere ... for the small uncharge I may go dealer next time.
The Shell Product is used ROW in the trucks as it's widely available.

Yes, I found numerous alternative sources for that connector but stuck with OE as I've had bad luck on all sorts of cars with no-name transmission parts. Genuine Mercedes parts are actually pretty affordable, I've rarely found a reason not to use the genuine article. The only reason I didn't go to my dealer is because, well, I'm lazy, and clicking some buttons on the internet takes less time than a four mile drive and a wait in the parts line.
The 236.10 spec has been superseded numerous times - they're at least to 236.14 and I think maybe 236.17. All the 236.x specs *should* be compatible... anything incompatible should get a new base number. When a new spec comes out, Mercedes stops selling the old spec. Not unlike GM and Dexron, etc. All the fluids I mentioned are explicitly compatible with the old spec, some the new specs as well. I have had good results with the Pentosin ATF1 (LV) in other applications (Mercedes, Saab, VAG, etc.) so I opted to stick with it here, though I nearly ordered genuine Mercedes fluid. Except, you know, it's nearly double the price!
Interestingly, a lot of folks on Mercedes forums (I have a W124, so I hang around) recommend using Valvoline MaxLife in the 5G-Tronic - I almost went that way, but, well, I didn't. It's an option, though I left it off the list because it doesn't actually carry Mercedes approval. Same with Shell ATF 134. However, this transmission also appeared in various ChryCo cars and trucks and these fluids are certified for *those* applications, so it should be fine in ours as well.
I selected shipping by camel, so it'll be a few weeks before I tackle this. In the interim, I'm looking for an affordable source on a MAF... I think mine is getting old and I'd like to replace it. Just not sure it's a $300 problem. I was stunned to see that number. I thought the days of $300 MAFs were long, long gone. Not so, I see.

That's great to know - certainly worth giving it a try!
MAF technology is pretty well established at this point so I'm baffled as to why the Jag part is $300 when most others have fallen to the $100 range. Maybe Jaguar just never re-evaluated pricing. At the rate I rack up miles on the cat (1500 miles a year) even a poor quality part would take many, many years to have issues. As long as it works when new, that's good enough for me!
Worth noting when I did some google searches for the part number (LNE1620BA) I found a bunch of sellers on aliexpress etc. offering them for $10 and $20. I won't lie, I thought about it.
Edit: Not that this is definitive, but rockauto shows the MA234 as being for naturally aspirated V8s (and a bunch of Mazdas & Subarus!). They show Spectra MA184 for the supercharged, however indicate Jag part numbers (eg LHE1620AA) for naturally aspirated cars. They also offer a Cardone reman for $130+$50 core that shows the correct LNE1620BA supercharged part number.
Edit 2: Spectra themselves insist MA184 is for the XJR as well as earlier I6 XJs.
