Transmission Fluid, to Change or Not to Change?
Hi,
Do you guys change your transmission fluid? Manual says:
But I read in some forums, that it's recommended to do that every 75k miles or so... What's your view on this?

Do you guys change your transmission fluid? Manual says:
The transmission, final drive unit and
supercharger (where fitted) are oil
filled-for-life units and do not require
checking by the driver. The few
maintenance tasks and checks required to
ensure reliable and safe day to day
running of the vehicle are detailed in this

What fluid do you use? ESSO LT 71141 or Shell ATF 3403-M115? Shall I use the same for my 1999 model? Now I read that XJR and XJ8 got different transmissions, so not even sure anymore. Checking manual.
http://www.pwdlubricants.com/new2.html says
DEXRON®-III
Esso LT71141
MERCON®V
Shell ATF 3403 M115
However, somewhere I read that DEXRON should be avoided for some reason.

The column heading is 'OK to use WHEN SPECIFIED'.
The normally aspirated 4.0L engines used the ZF transmission which specified for the LT 71141 spec fluid. There are several suppliers that claim to meet that specification.
See this link on the XK8/R forum under 'Transmissions' for several discussions on the subject:

By removing the pan and changing the filter you are going to be able to drain about 6L, plus or minus. The rest is in, and will stay in, the torque converter.
So you are going to get about 60% changed. If you are serious about such things, drive it a thousand or two miles and drain it again with the pan plug and you will have about an 80% change.

I think your Super V8 has the supercharged engine, so it will have the Mercedes transmission. You can check out a recent discussion of trans fluid change in that transmission at this thread:
https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/s...ad.php?t=30591
Also, to add to what Tom said: I believe there is also a drain plug in the torque converter (turn the transmission over until you see a drain plug at the bottom). With the torque converter also drained, I think the only remaining fluid should be in the cooler lines.
I read on a mercedes forum that you can drain the pan, add 3-4L, then run the engine for about 60-90 seconds to get the remaining old fluid into the pan. Drain again and perform the re-fill procedure from step 1. You should then have mostly all new fluid. I did not do this procedure and I have not verified that it is accurate or adviseable. I'm sticking with Tom's suggestion, drive 1K-2K miles and drain/re-fill again.
As far as fluid, the Mercedes unit had ATF 3403-M115 from factory. The newer Mercedes 7 speeds use a different fluid, which I think has also changed since the 7 speeds were introduced. ATF 134 is the latest MB fluid??? MB recommends the newest fluid for the 722.6 and 722.9 transmissions. It is also a bit cheaper than the ATF 3403. Not sure what fluids you have available there, but I took a chance and replaced with Royal Purple fluid, which claims to meet ATF 3403 specs. Its a big chance, but smooth shifts so far. Time will tell if it was a poor risk or not.

Should I Change the Tranny Filter?
Sometimes I notice that my transmission slams into gear, especially when the car is coming out of my driveway at an incline. When I replaced the radiator six months ago I didn't top off the tranny fluid because I couldn't find the filler plug.
Now with 168,000 mi., is the consensus to change the filter and whatever fluid comes out with the pan? Or, should I leave it alone. The car drives smooth except for the ocassional slamming into drive.
Also, where is that fill plug?
Thanks
