54k check engine

We have a 2003 XJ Sport the check enginge light came on. I have 54k miles and the check engine light is staying on. We have not driven the car since. is this something a need to take to the dealer. We have the low profile 255 40 18 tires on this car and my wife travel 120 miles round trip to work and we are wearing out some tires can I put the regular XJ 18" tires and rims on this car? BAFFO

Unless the "restricted performance" light came one, you should be ok to keep driving the car.
Get it checked out though.

You can put on the regular 18's.
