98 XJ8 ATF Esso and VW type: Topping up.
I have a 98 XJ8, and I removed the radiator and lost some fluid.... Jaguar wants 60 bucks for the Esso LT 71141. The posts about this issue are vauge and I didnt really get the answer I was looking for.... Can I mix VW/Audi - G 052 162 A2 with the 71141? Are they chemically the same? Approx. how much fluid is lost when you remove the radiator? I do have the Alldata details to add fluid, and need to know if I could use the 20 dollar Audi brand instead of the 60 dollar Jaguar brand. Thanks.

Mostly because my other car is an 01 audi, which I just did an engine swap on and have some audi brand trans fluid left... The mobile 1 ATF is red..... makes me nervous addin red to clear... Lookin for that direct respone of "YES" or "NO"! I'm actually doing this because i have a Trans. Failsafe display of p1722 (which could be many things) that seemed to start the first day it was below freezing... When I swapped the engine on my jag (i tend to blow engines), I removed radiator and all trans. associated lines.. never topped off the transmission... I KNOW, im an idiot! I'm gonna make a few attempts at fixin it. If I cant, sad to say, Ill strip her down and part her out (pics avail on my facebook page: facebook.com/jeiiomix )

I know this post is from a few months ago but I just wanna follow up. The Audi ATF (G 052 162) is the same as the Esso 71121. VW sells it for 19 bucks a litre and Jaguar for 67 bucks a litre. I emailed Mobile, and was told that Mobile 1 Synthetic is fully compatible w/ the ZF5HP24 (which is actually a german built unit, ken@britishparts.com ).

Like I said before, Esso and Mobil are the same company. A rep at mobil told me their ATF One is fully compatible w/ the ZF 5HP24. I used it in my XJ8 w/ no issues. I checked Kens site, and the fluid he has is more than double what the Mobil cost. Don't mean to blast anyones product, but I dont see the sense.... I just checked Kens site and he has 6 listings for AFT... His Esso type fluid is 20 bucks a litre. 30 less than jaguar, same price as VW, and 13 more than Mobil One. Actually my Jag is shifting smoother and better than ever w/ the One. Just my 2 cents.

what is consensus on changing the tranny filter and new fluid
I have a 98 VDP with 168k. I know the tranny is sealed for life. However, have other owners on this board changed the tranny filter, pan gasket and new fluid. Will doing so screw-up the tranny?
I'm thinking about doing so. Replaced the radiator last year and didn't top off the fluid. Going to top-off, but if recommend (especiall the techs on this board) to change the filter, pan gasket and fluid, I will do the whole thing.

Yes, I recommend changing the fluid and filter screen every 50K miles or so. Forget the seal for life. Treat this transmission like you would have treated it back in the day when the manufacturer specified regular fluid/filter changes.
I've done a number of 5HP24s and 6HP26s, all with Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF (I've also done a few 5HP24s with Castrol multi-vehicle import). There are several thousands of miles on these cars with no transmission issues.
On the color of fluid - US suppliers of commercially sold transmission fluid add a red dye to it so it is distinguishable from motor oil. It has no effect on the formula.

I got confirmation from The California Transmission Company (www.thectsc.com) regarding ESSO LT 71141. This is their statement:
