The 98 XJ8 transmission model is a ZF5HP24. It is manufactured by a German company call ZF. The ZF ATF Life Guard usually sell for about $20 for a 1 liter bottle. If you search this forum, you will find posts from other member who have used and gotten very good results with the Mobil 1 ATF. We had a certified ZF transmission rebuilder do our rebuild. He filled the transmission with the Life Guard after the rebuild, tested it using a dynamo.

Makes me wonder how much the dealerships actually pay for their ESSO ATF. I'm sure they'd get more customers if they went with Lifeguard products. I'm going to use the Lifeguard for my transmission. Thanks Jim

Ken
After our mechanic installed our transmission after the rebuild, He needed almost 2 more bottles of ATF. I had to go to the local VW dealership and purchase it. The VW part# is G-052-162-A2 and it cost me $19 for each 1 liter bottle. I bought 3 bottles. All the dealerships and ZF repair facilities have the ESSO atf in their own branded 1 liter bottles. Jaguar, Mercedes Benz, etc. charge around $60 per bottle.
I mention this because the VW dealership was much closer to our home than the ZF repair facility.
