98 xj8 penion seal
is there a secreat to replacing the penion seal? I have one leaking and replaced it for the second time and it is coming appart again. is there a shim, thrust washer between the yoke and the penion bearing?
Hi Roy,
If there is any play in the pinion bearing, the seal will fail in short order. Did you mark the pinion shaft nut location so you could return it to exactly the same position, or just slightly tighter, to maintain the bearing preload?
Cheers,
Don
Hi Roy,
I'm sure you are plenty smart - you just lacked the necessary information.
There may be hope, if the pinion bearings have not been damaged due to running under incorrect preload. The first thing I would suggest is that you check JTIS for the correct seal replacement process. If you don't have JTIS, it can be downloaded from this forum. See Jim Lombardi's post from 07/26/2013 near the end of the thread for helpful instructions:

According to JTIS, the pinion nut is staked at the pinion shaft keyway, so that may help you relocate the nut properly.
Also, you want to "pull" the pinion seal down into place with the flange & nut, not by hammering the seal or flange.
You may be able to tell when the stake mark on the nut aligns with the shaft keyway when the nut is at the correct tightness. I would suggest installing the nut until it is just snug, then turn it just enough for the stake mark to align with the keyway.
You will then need to check the pinion "drive flange axial run-out" and confirm that it is no greater than 0.08 mm, then check the "pinion spigot radial run-out" to ensure that it does not exceed 0.08 mm. JTIS has illustrations that will help explain these terms and how to measure the run-out in both directions.
Please keep us informed!
Cheers,
Don
