'98 XJ8 Steering Column Telescope Feature Broken
I'm sure this problem is here, so if someone would be so kind as to point me to the repair if it's already out there, I would be most appreciative.
The memory works, and the wheel moves up and down just fine. But in both manual and memory, it just makes a clicking noise on the telescope feature.
Can I manage this myself (what tools/skills/body strength is involved) or should I spend the $$?
If parts are needed I'll need a parts link, along with instructions that include 8x10 glossies with arrows and numbers and a paragraph on the back of each.....

I would guess that dealer parts for this would be phenomenally expensive. Used columns seem to be fairly cheap on online auction sites. You could buy one for the cost of a couple of hours of shop time, and practice taking it apart. It should be easy to figure out where the telescope motor/gears are, and then just swap them over to your car.

Telescope and tilt steering
These functions are controlled by two separate motors.
You do not need to change the steering column.
The tilt usually seems to break first.
This is an expensive part, but do not buy a used one. Try to pull the wheel to where you want it positioned, with the switch activated. When it is in the right position, turn the switch off and leave it alone.
If it really bothers you, get a new telescope wheel motor from the dealer.
It should be around $600 for your car installed.
Otherwise, set in where you want and forget about it.

if you hear the telescoping motor run when you turn off the engine, it is probably the rod from the motor to the screw drive of the telescope. It's an easy fix, problem is the limited space if your hands are large. If I recall, it took me about an hour and half. Do a search and you will find another thread with procedures.

The reach motor is a common problem. Mine is broken also. I have the replacement part, just not the initiative to do the work yet. There are no 8x10 glossies as of yet that I am aware of. Here is a discussion found in the XK8/R forum FAQ Sticky.

Could be. Mine ran for a few seconds after it failed and then quit. Since I then tried to reset the position the memory reset it has not tried to move. Guess I could go out and try the manual joy stick and see what happens.
I'll get a round-to-it sooner or later and will document with photo's if no one has by then. Doing an engine swap on another hobby car which is eating allocated car time. Gotta go measure the drive shaft to have a Ford/Volvo one made.

The telescoping function didn,t work anymore on my XJR .
i could hear the motor running but there was no movement of the steering wheel.
I bought a complete vertical motor with shaft {the motor thats sits on the upper side clamped on the steering column }on Ebay ,because i didn,t want to get stuck when opening the steering column .
The only thing that is broken was the shaft {picture} that connects the motor to the vertical mechanism on the column.
I replaced the small shaft and it works like a charm again .
