Default 99 XJ8 starting issue

Car cranks but won't start unless I spray some throttle body cleaner down the plastic corrugated hose. I had the throttle body cleaned, it needed a new fuel pump(installed) and filter. Once the car starts it is fine. I tried starting the car with the gas pedal down but it doesn't really do much to assist starting other then drain my battery.
After I got it started I drove it for at least a 1/2 hour and brought it back to my garage which is about 45F. I turned it off and tried to restart it but had the same issue. Why will it start when I spray the fluid? Even then it takes a little effort but I always seem to get it going. I don't use the car as a everyday car. I can't go anywhere with it till I feel the problem is solved. A Jag that can't be trusted to start is otherwise just a pretty piece of metal.
Also, I hear all this stuff on the ABS controller going bad and for me it was just the 30 Amp fuse. I wish when people start on all the fixes they just say to check the fuse first.
Thank You!

Sounds like your losing prime somewhere or your MAF went south? Did you check and/or replace the fuel pump mount ring gasket when you did the pump? Check the hose lines for weather checking and MAP sensor also. If you didn't disconnect the fuel lines going into the tank when you pulled it, you possibly cracked a line.
Oh, also be sure to check your fuel pump relay.

I didn't do the installs. If a line cracked wouldn't I smell gas? If the fuel pump relay was bad would it still allow the car to otherwise run fine when I do get it started? What are the MAF and the MAP sensor?? I'll ask my guy also on mount ring gasket. The car ran fine and started with no issue for weeks after he did the fuel pump/filter.
Thank You for assisting.

Ok, I thought you just had the fuel pump done and was now having the issue. Then I would definitely look at the MAF sensor (Mass Air Flow). Its the unit coming from your air filter built into the tube going to your throttle body. Its literally attached by the filter cover with an electrical connection. If your car runs rough or starts slower than normal, usually you can clean it with a MAF only cleaner and t will give you a couple more years. But yours sounds like it has flat out failed. You can get them from Amazon or check with The Frugal Mechanic for pricing.

Just an fyi, the MAP sensor is just behind the throttle body on the firewall. Its a small device about the size of a disposable cigarette lighter (black and rectangular) and is mounted just above the throttle body and looks very indiscript. It will have a vacuum hose coming off the bottom of it.

Use OBD to check every sensor you can figure out - especially temperature ones as it adjusts fuel based on the various sensors.

Unplugged the MAP sensor and it started right up and kept starting. Easy install when I get new sensor and not to expensive a part. I get to drive my nice looking piece of metal again.
Thank You!
