Hi all,

Have a dead battery and need to replace but can't open the trunk. Looking for suggestions.

Heading to the shop on Wed. to have the tranny/break switch replaced so i can park it in Park, instead of N, with the break. also going to have some leaks repaired.

On my 2001 XJ8, the key mechanically opens the trunk if the fob fails or if the car battery is discharged. You might need to wiggle the key in and out a bit as you try to turn it (I forget whether clockwise or counterclockwise), but you ought to be able to get the trunk open without any electricity whatsoever.

 

If the boot lock has the common jam, problem. wd40 it OR

Open the hood and jump the positive lead to the big power terminal up high on the right side on the rounded cover just behind the wheel well. It should be covered with a 90 degree boot- just pull the boot back.

 

man o man - i dont think the key has even been in the boot before i tried earlier today. I just couldn't open it. The trick was the jump - thanks for the point on location, i was able to get it open thanks to the charge.

now need a new battery, the current one is old and since it's a low mile car, I'm sure it didn't get the long drives often to keep it in shape. Need to head off to the shop for some leak fix, plug change and a looksee at the tensioners.
