Default ABS Light

Just another ABS light/Trac not avail/ASC not avail thread...

I've had very infrequent periods when my ABS light comes on, and I haven't been able to figure out when it happens.

There are some things that "seem" to lead up to the light coming on.

1. Sitting in stop and go traffic in the heat -- maybe three or four times.
2. Starting the car after sitting in a hot, humid parking lot -- once or twice.
3. Once in a while when driving, no particular speed, sometimes fast, sometimes slow -- two or three times, not related to #1 or #2 above.

I haven't noticed, as some others have said, that it comes one when raining, but heat and humidity seem to be a factor although I cannot say for sure.

It came on today after waiting 10 minutes for a train (after driving 20 miles, mostly on the interstate) and then letting the car sit for 5 minutes at the ATM -- when I got back in the car the light was on, it wasn't on when I parked.

I'm pretty sure it'll not come on when I start the car up tomorrow to drive it.

Should I check for codes? (Good idea -- I'll be right back!).....the only code was P1111, so nothing there! I started the car after checking for codes and the ABS light is no longer on.

Any thoughts? I don't find this to be a major issue, just a tad annoying at times.

my car had similar symptoms, I went with this option:

Jaguar ABS Computer Rebuild Repair XK8 XJS XJR XKR XJ8 | eBay

getting the part out of there is a pain but you can't beat the price. if you need your car every day this might not be the best option, I sent mine in on a tuesday and got it back the following monday

Then use this link and see if it helps you narrow it down. Also please note the procedure where a drill bit was used to get access to the normally failed connection instead of cutting the entire box open. Note the check list is for a 1999 XK8 but it should be close.

Thanks, I'll consider doing the repair.

First I'd like to check/clean the wheel sensors and connectors.

Anyone have good photos of those?

The car will run (and stop) fine without the module. It just will not have ABS / Traction like it does not have it now when the light is on. So, you COULD remove the module and still drive the car. Of course, it would not be as safe as having the ABS working.

Hi Oldmike
Here is the information from my experience and ABS Module repair I posted 5/2/2013:

For last 5 days - ABS light on as soon as key turned to position II after system check function. Code Scan shows C1095 (Indy Jaguar mechanic's Scanned all systems).

Scan indicated open circuit in ABS module.

Indy shop used my print out of the forums DIY to remove ABS module electrical component, open module cover and resoldered the 2 pins with cracked solder on them.

Remove the 2 fuses and bracket near ABS module to make more space to remove ABS module.

Released brake lines circular clips and slightly bend lines enough to remove the module component.

Used a small torx drive bit socket with rachet on 2 top bolts and small torx drive with a small pair of vise-grip pliers (on the torx drive bit socket) to remove 2 bottom bolts.

Used a Hacksaw with new blade, then utility knife to cut through top cover seal of ABS module electrical component.

Job took about 90 minutes, but probably 50 to 60 minutes was spent on removing top cover and resoldering the 2 pins and sealing top cover.

After repair, started car and took test drive with no abs light on and no more ASC & TRAC warning messages.

Also here is the information from the ABS Error - ASC & TRAC Unavailable ABS Module remove and repair thread - by forum member dsetter --- I put all of his post into this PDF so I could print it and give it to my Indy mechanic -- It really helped:

Jim - thanks, that's a nice write-up with photos, I've saved it on my iPad for future reference.

Now that I've read, re-read, and then re-read again, the several how-tos, I'm confident that I will be able to repair my ABS module myself and save a ton of money. I am not going to be able to get to it for a couple of weeks, but when I do, I'll take photos and post them just to add to the wonderful information already on this site regarding this issue.

Thanks for all the help -- now I'm off to the XK8 section to find Sam's wheel sensor video...ok, herre's a link to Sam's thread with photos, at the end of his how-to is a link to the video.

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...ors-faq-37434/

That's exactly what I was looking for, so now I'll clean the wheel speed sensors and "hope" that the ABS light problem goes away (I don't have a lot of confidence in this fix, but what the heck, can't hurt!).

I haven't had a chance to do anything about this issue, yet. But, yesterday I started my car, the light/warnings came on, so I turned the car off, restarted it, same thing. Did that again. Same thing. Can't remember if I did it one more time before backing out of the driveway or not. Anyhow....when I got to my destination, I left the engine running and plugged in my code reader -- still only shows P1111.

A couple of questions ---

1. I've noticed that some people with similar issues get "C" codes, does my Actron CP9125 only display "P" codes?

2. Can I take a reading with my code reader with the engine running? I've never done that before, only done it with the key in the "ON" position.

3. Did I "reset" the system by turning off the engine and restarting it multiple times?

4. And the big question -- since the ABS light/ASC-TRAC not available waring comes on when I start the car, before putting it in gear, does that tell us anything? Like maybe it's NOT the sensors or the wiring to the sensors, and would most likely be the solder connections inside the box?

Thanks.

Mike

Yes you can start and drive your car with the OBDII code reader attached just remember that it will also capture a temporary code. As for the codes a few codes are proprietary to Jaguar and may not be seen by your reader so do not be surprised. Any codes you get document them accurately and post them. The ABS system makes checks when you start the car once it finds a fault it will give you the not available indication it would be difficult to say with certainty what is causing without the codes or checks. However, we have seen several ABS control modules with a solder connection problem.

The ABS codes are read from the ABS module, so obd (only) readers will not read them. You could GUESS that the code is not a wheel sensor from your observation, but it would not be a completely reliable guess. It seems like (without a statistical compilation) that most reported faults are sensors, low battery voltage and motor lead solder joints. So, make your choice; .. its a pretty good bet!

Thanks guys and great write up. My wifes '02 XJR has had the ACS/Trac warning for a year. I cleaned the wheel sensor with no luck.

I'm going to pull the ACS module and see what I can find.

FWIW, you might also look at BBA Reman for repaired ABS components. I used them with my Saab years ago and Volvo more recently (same failed part...) and it was painless. Call them, order a reman part, install it, then ship yours back. It takes about two weeks to receive the part, but at least you're not out a core while you wait.

Isn't there some reprogramming or whatever that must be done at the dealership if you install a different unit?
