I have these tables standard in my car, as it is a full Daimler SVO (Special Vehicle Operations) interior, similar to the VDP interior, but everything (and I mean everything) is real Ivory Connolly leather. There are 2 things to watch out with them:
1) Passengers or people who try to operate them will get it wrong first time generally, which puts stress on the little screws. Which leads to:
2) The little screws holding the tables on can work loose and cause the table to rattle with the car's motion.

You should give your passengers the same instructions I do:
Rules for my car:
1. Get in.
2. Sit down.
3. Hold on.
4. Shut up
5. Don't try to operate any passenger accessible features of the car that you don't fully understand.

(#5 recently added, thanks.)

Ken,

I haven't gotten around to the seat wiring, let alone installing the trays. Working on getting her running and that leaves no time for the fun mods. Like others I've searched the net only to see "I've done this..." but no pictures or wire-to-wire diagrams.

Yeah I hear that, it's low on my list to have rear passengers messing with seat settings

Add #6: If you MUST have Grey Poupon, well then ask for it...

Default Great post

Way to go guys. The rear trays finish it off beautifully. I think ever XJ should have them. Burl walnut beats leather any day.

XJ8 SWB non-VDP with AGD / Oatmeal Interior
Great write up. Thank you. Super easy to do following the instructions you provided. I had no trouble doing it at all. Didn't have time to tackle the seat switch wiring but I plan to do so and post back when done.

I’ve actually got a complete kit available to do this, includes necessary seat backs, tables, screws & switches for moving the front seat. The leather is oatmeal AGD and the wood is burr walnut. Removed from a 1998 Daimler V8.

Collection only in the UK due to size and weight, but available if anyone in the UK wants to do this.

I would love to do this to my XJR. I looked on eBay but no one if offering them in black. If anyone has them in black, please let me know. I’ll continue to watch eBay and hope they pop up.

If this was only state side, same colors in my 98’ XJR and would love to add the trays.

anyone know if this is possible to modify a series 3 xj6 with these tables?
the width dimensions are probably wider on my seats, and there will be no screw holes,
but could some wood block be mounted on the seat back to hold the screws and table weight?

thanks if anyone has any bright ideas
Best

I realize I'm resurrecting an old thread, but it's directly related to what I'm doing with my '98 XJR. The seat backs I got off ebay don't fit correctly to the seats in my car. I have two questions:

1. Were all of the X308 picnic tray seatbacks the same from year to year?
2. Were the 98 XJR seatbacks different than later years?

The problem is that the foam on my seat back seems to be too bulky. The "tray" seatbacks do not fit up correctly. It looks like the holes would line up if the foam wasn't so thick that I can't push the new seatback in place. Supposedly the ebay seat backs and trays were from an 02 VDP I think. I know the seats themselves are different across the various models, but I didn't think the seat BACKS were different. Any thoughts? Thank you!

All 94-03 picnic tray seatbacks mount in the same way, 308s have different passenger side controls and that's about it. If you want to put the seatback in you have to unscrew the bracket for the standard mounting clips, rip the cardboard lining out and ditching the foam out also helps a lot. Take a boxcutter and cut the extra leather until you can clearly see the upper VDP table (obviously 100% irreversible) screw holes and you should be ready to go. XJR seats are slightly different from normal ones but I'm pretty sure they use the same back section.

Ok that helps. That’s exactly what it looks like I need to do, but I wanted a second opinion before I do any cutting. Thanks

I know this is an old thread, but I thought this might be helpful.

There are also two metal clips on each of the side bolster of the old seat back that need to be disengaged (no screws).

They are forward of the button screws.

Be gentle. The metal clips simply hook over each other, and you need to push the seat back forward and then pull the side of the seat back to clear the other clip.

I know this because I just did this job today.
