Hi to all. Have run into some trouble and would very much appreciate advise...I own a 2002 3.2 litre XJ8. Recently I thought I would fit an anti-sway bar off the 'sports' version to my car. Turns out the bolts from the diff on my car are too short and it means the rear suspension will have to be disassembled to put in the longer bolts onto my dif. When I got the sway bar from the wreckers they only sent the actual sway bar to me , I didn't realise that I would need longer bolts and also different 'washers' for those bolts (and neither did the wreckers). Any ideas ??

 

I don't think your car has the suspension frame (wishbone tie) piece needed to accept the anti-sway bar. The anti-sway bar does not attach to the bolts for the differential. Only the XJR and the sport suspension XJ8 have the wishbone tie with the flanges to bolt the anti sway bar brackets to. To fit the anti-sway bar to my car I had to make a custom flange and bolt that to the wishbone tie that came with my car.


The drawing shows the wishbone tie from the XJR and sport. The photos show my stock wishbone tie and then with the custom flange and anti-sway bar brackets and bar installed

 

To rocklandjag.... Very many thanks for your info about the sway bar , I have been mucking around with this problem for 18 months. As a completely unfair ask, do you have the measurements of the bar you made up ? or could you supply to me another made up bar at whatever cost ?Alanmurg (from Cairns Australia)

That's a neat job Rockland, do you think a kit would be commercially viable? What where you impressions after the mod?

 

Sean - I don't know if there would be enough interest to make this commercially viable. I am very pleased with the results. The car corners with less body roll and the front and rear of the car feel like they are at least on the same page when making a turn.


I may have sacrificed some ride quality (it's been installed for too long to remember) but the car is still wonderful on the highway

To rockland jag.... hoping you havent forgotten me. Would still very much appreciate your measurements , notice that there is a 'scolloped piece out of the metal bar and would like to know how deep it is. Also..... if I could get a wishbone tie off a XKR or Sports model of my car , plus the 'washers' , this would solve my problem wouldn't it ?

Call Buckhead Imports Performance (Gino)@7708741807. They did one for my 01 VDP SC and it works well for my car. Handling is much improved.

 

Allen - here are the dimensions of the plate:
- 16" long x 5" tall x 3/8" thick
-the anti-sway brackets are mounted 1" in from each end of the plate
-the bottom hole of the brackets is 1 -5/8" up from the bottom of the plate
-the top hole of the bracket is 2 - 3/4" up from the lower hole
- the cut-out in the bracket for the nut on the pivot bolt is 2"
- the recess in the plate for the differential carrier bolt is 3/16", this allows the 2 nuts to fully engage the threads of the existing bolts


I hope this information is helpful


I recommend that you make a cardboard template of your existing wishbone tie and bolt locations in order to exactly locate the pivot nuts and the 4 differential carrier bolts in case there are any production differences between my car and yours.


If you can get a wishbone tie from an XJR then you won't need to make this plate. I did not think anyone would remove this part from a complete rear end assembly so I made the plate instead
