Default Auto box problems

Hi there, I have a 1998 xj6 4.0 with the 5 speed auto box. We aqquired it with a faulty box and I was after some help for the best cause of action. The box engages reverse and 123 gears fine with no issues but drive slips when you use it and seems to jump out of gear. The last resort is obviously a new gear box but wondering is there any other options we have to maybe get this fault sorted or what could be causing it? As I'm a newbie to the jags any help would be appreciated. Many thanks in advance everyone

I take it you mean 1998 XJ8.
If time is not a factor I would drain the oil, taking note of how much comes out.Should be about 5 litres if it had the correct amount in to start with.
Drop the sump pan, remove filter and see how the valve body is looking.
Remove valve body for closer inspection.
Put it all back together and see what happens.
Make sure you follow the correct oil filling procedure(very important).
There is loads of info on here regarding the ZF 5HP24 so your best bet is to do a search and read them thoroughly.
Or just fit a second hand gearbox but make sure it has the Trans-Go Pressure Regulator fitted.
Good luck.

That's ok,it's a great Jag to start with.
Read about them and take it all in.
You'll be fine.
Lots of good people on here to help.
Take care.
