Battery vent location with pics
When I bought my XJR, a new battery had already been installed and whoever did it did not put the vent tube back where it is supposed to go.
I put a new battery in the car a couple of years ago and could not figure out where the vent tube was supposed to go. I looked for it all over the floor of the trunk near the battery and could not find it, so I gave up and just resigned myself to checking the area frequently to make sure no battery acid was coming out of the battery and causing corrosion.
Today, while I was checking the battery area, I noticed a rubber escutcheon to the right back of the battery with nothing going thru it. Ah ha! I finally found the exit for the battery vent, when I wasn't really looking for it, funny how that works out sometimes.
Pics below with the exit point from the battery, clear plastic tube and location of the hole in trunk for the tube to go thru. I also included a pic of the vent tube as it shows from the underside of the car and a couple with the hold down in place which obscures the location of the vent exit on the battery.
If you get a new battery installed, make sure the vent tube is re-installed or you could have problems with hydrogen gas in the trunk or corrosion on the trunk floor or the fuse/relay box located right behind the battery.
I was lucky, my battery never vented anything. But I also could not get a good answer on where the vent tube was supposed to go, so here you are for future reference.

I don't know about the location of the battery in the X Type but......
My XJR battery is in the trunk, meaning it has to vent somewhere other than the enclosed trunk. Batteries produce hydrogen gas when they charge so having an unvented battery in the enclosed space is not a good thing, even if it does not shoot out acid like some do.
You have to ask for the correct battery that has small 1/4" vents at each end and a vent kit that includes the plug for the end you will not use and the adapter to go into the opening and connect to the tube.
I made sure I got the kit with my new battery but couldn't figure out where to run the vent until today.
It is more common than not for an unfamiliar installer to not install the vent tube, so just because you don't see it doesn't mean it is not supposed to be there.
