Brake Issues
Hello all,
I have a 1997 4.0 Sovergien XJ8 x308 and got a rather frustrating issue.
I (about 4000 miles ago) replaced the front break pads as they had fully worn thro, however a few days ago they started rumbling so checked and just one of the two pads on the front passengers wheel had almost completely worn out, the inboard one still looks almost new and the driver side both in and outboard look almost new however in the 20ish mile round trip to the dealer to buy new pads as suspecting just a naff pad, (BTW all jaguar OEM brought from the same jaguar dealer) went to change the pads. However noticed that in that short trip it had failed completely and had scored warped and blackened the disk. So i got a lift back and brought some new disks when i went to replace the disks i have hit a problem.
The two bolts that hold the caliper carriage to the hub have so badly seized on i have already shattered a chrome vanadium half meter breaker bar, i have tried heating the bolts, the carriage, hitting various parts with a hammer both carriage, hub, bolt and breaker bar while under tension, Ive tried various penetrating fluids and ive even stood on the end of the breaker bar but to no avail.
I dont have a impact gun, which is annoying as im sure that would do the trick in a matter of seconds.
Is there any other way to get the disk off or any other possibility's to try? as i have now run out of ideas.

Sounds like you have a stuck caliper piston.

The caliper bolts are not that big, sounds like your breaker bar was made at the end of the silk road.... The caliper bolt passes through the hub, so if you shear the bolt in your removal efforts your hub will be ok. I would be careful with the heat you don't want to fry your wheel bearing.

I had the same problem on my XJ6. If you are using a propane torch you will not get enough heat to the threads in the caliper, and may destroy the seals.
A oxy-acetylene or MAPP torch will provide a higher temp flame in a smaller area and should solve the problem.
It only required about 30sec. of heat with my MAPP set to loosen mine, whereas with propane several minutes did nothing.
I used a piece of asbestos shingle to reflect heat away from the caliper body and hose, then flushed the brake system when done.
