Default Brake lights not working

Hello:
My brake lights are not working.
The 3rd light works when you depress the brake pedal.
The tail lights work, but don,t illuminate brightly when the brake pedal is depressed. In fact, nothing happens.
The rear fog light work, and do the signal lights.

Just the tail lights don,t acknowledge the brake pedal being pressed.

I changed all the bulbs and nothing.

I get the "Check rear lights" every time the pedal is pressed.
Frustrating.

Any ideas?..

That sounds like a failing SLCM or security locking module. It's located in the trunk under the fusebox, I recall torx bolts hold the plastic frame to remove it.
The rear wing or fender lights are effected but not the 3rd brake light. Some have repaired this module, some have replaced it, but you need a year specific module, which has a code you can locate on the 'CATS' list found on the shoulder panel of spare wheel well. SLCM ----, the part number then the program code. The replacement needs to match.

Do a search of the terms I've used to find posts that you can compare symptoms and fixes.
Here's a thread to kick you off..

Hope this helps

While this may be obvious, you have tried swapping the fuse to the taillights, right?

If your center stop light works then your brake pedal switch is indeed good (which would be a typical cause)

Hey guys, thanks for the info.
Before posting, I replaced all the bulbs and put a new fuse in.

So, I got the code# from MY SLCM and ordered a used one today.
Let,s hope this works.

Thanks for the interest and tips/advise.

I'll let you know by the end of the week when it gets here if this is fixed.

Hello all,
So, I got in the new SLCM today and installed it.
Voila, everything is now working.
Woo Hoo!!

Ok, now I tried to reprogram my key fob and nothing.
Everything else works, so I'm not disappointed.

But, I followed the instructions on this forum to,program and it isn't taking.
I put the key in and hold the left side wand.
I turn the key to the ACC position and flick the wand 4 times.
The car beeps.
I press the key fob lock button 5 times and the car beeps.

Now what do I do?

One other note: The "check rear light" still comes on every time I press the pedal, yet everything is working fine except the key fob.

Any Ideas why this message still comes on?

Do a hard reset then see where you're at.

Just so I,m clear on this:
To do a "Hard Reset" I disconnect the negative battery cable and touch the positive cable with it?

Is it a quick touch?
Will it spark?

Just want to be sure so I don,t blow the system on a 15 year old XJ8.
