Default Light in Key Dead

My 95 XJS has a light in the key that does not work anymore. I called the dealer and they have no fix for it, not available. So has anyone taken their key apart to see if they could fix it? Maybe replace the battery even though the manual says you can't. I'm hesitant to try to take it apart cause I don't want to destroy it. It's not the most important thing but it would be nice to have it working.

I usually just CAREFULLY cut it open along the seam and replace the battery. It is an odd shaped battery. It is a button style with a raised area. You can get the new batteries at Walmart or a watch sales/repair shop. VARTA V625U.

It will slide back together and if the bulb is good, it will work again.

Al,

I've moved your question from General Tech Help to XJS forum. This is the place to post technical questions about your model.

No cutting involved.

Search my posts and you'll find a discussion on batteries and, I believe, bulbs too!

Cut it open? I tried to gently pry it open on the opposite side of the button but it does not want to open. I don't want to break it.

Vee, You have 500 posts when I try to search for "batteries" and "key battery" . Could you narrow it down a bit?
Thanks

Search under ignition key light. I posted a thread about a year ago on how to disassemble the key and replace the battery for my 93 XJS.

I think you were doing the search incorrectly. When I searched my posts for "key", it returned 19 posts.

Thank you guys. I got the bulb and button out of the key. Did not realize that the rectangle on the back was a button to release it. I now see that you have to split the button housing open. What did you use to glue it back together? It doesn't look like it just snaps back together.

It does snap back together. The button holds everything in place.

You should have pressed the button down to take things apart. I'm not sure what you mean by "split the button housing open"

I got it open. Looks good. Going to the store to get the battery.
I couldn't have done it without you.
Thanks a lot.
