Default Brake lights operation/ignition key

I own a 1999 VDP and noticed that when the key is not in the ignition the brake lights do not go on when I step on the brake peddle. I can't find anything in the manual on whether this is how the brake lights are suppose to operate. Does anyone know if this is the correct operation.

My 98 XJR is the same, why do you want brake lights without the key in the ignition ?

Our 2001 XJ8 also works the same way. No brake lights with brake pedal applied until key is put in and turned to position 1, or after engine is running (either operation).

Thanks for answering my post. I do not need the brake lights to go on when I step on the brake with the key out, I just thought it was strange since with my other cars (not Jaguars) if you step on the brake the lights go on. I want ed to be sure I did not have an electrical problem
