Default British Racing Green : Origin

A Colorful History of Racing Hues : British Racing Green

British Racing Green is one of the most iconic colors of the automotive world. It’s provenance goes back 110 years and has decorated countless racing icons. Unfortunately, there are a lot of misconceptions about the origin of this special emerald color. Here we will attempt to sort through the myriad stories and present to you the true origin of British Racing Green.

When I was a small child I had a picture book made of thick cardboard pages that had action track pictures of the different nations' cars. The silver Mercedes of Germany, the green BRMs of Britain, the red Ferraris of Italy. the blue Bugattis of France, etc. (The Mercedes were "silver", because they had bare polished aluminum bodywork which passed for "white" as a team country color)

For many years I believed that there was a specific "British Racing Green", but over the years I've learned that several shades pass for the title, some of them very light in color, although most of us think of BRG as the that dark green we are all familiar with!
