Default Buy or pass?

Hello to all. I joined the forum about 8 months ago and have been looking for an xjr since. I realize I have a lot to read and learn in order to enjoy these cars. I'm looking for something I can drive and enjoy as much as possible. I enjoy wrenching and properly maintaining a vehicle.
Today I previewed a 2002 going up for auction in the morning. 167000 miles but in great condition. Appears to have been loved as much as it was driven. My only concern is a faint ticking sound coming from the top of the engine, maybe the supercharger. Is this somewhat normal or something to stay away from? Engine itself sounds real healthy but for the ticking on top. Think I can get it for the right price and it has all the options and color combo I've been looking for. Sorry for the novel , just anxious to get my 1st Jag

Thx

It's either the supercharger or injectors that I can think of... Neither of which is a big issue if the price is right... Maybe $4-6k?

Let us know how it goes. I think you should pay less than that for it personally. Dunno if the color combo is unobtainium or rare that you are looking for but 4-6K with that many miles is an all day price around me, without a ticking sound. But as long as the rest of the car around it is very nice then I would say go for it. Auction though you should be able to come away for less, problem at an auction is a lot of people buy based on looks and boy do these cars look good lol keep us posted curious what it will sell for in an auction setting. Is it an impound auction?

It is a new car trade and consignment car auction. It starts in a few hours , so ill post how goes. The car is an xjr 100! Hope to be the only one who realizes what they are looking at though I doubt it. That's the reason a small ticking sound is not enough to just take a " pass".

There are less than 500 of those in the world.

Grab it, any repair costs will pale in comparison to its value now and in the future.

Good call on the limited production, D. However, I'd be careful with the value. You and I as well as the guys here can appreciate the car but I question its overall worth on the open market. True, the contents and rarity will drive the price up but only relative to the XJRs.

I'm keeping my eye on the classic market. Although I see upswings in some of the marques, Jaguar is not one of them. There's really nothing from the 70's (maybe XKE although, Series III E-type is not setting the world on fire) and the 80's to push up the values or generate much interest in our cars right now.

My prediction (more like a guess or an opinion) is that the XJR-6 will hit the upswing in the next 3-5 years. Reliable motor and relative rarity coupled with very few examples in great shape will buoy the prices.

I'm sure that the XJR100 will be heading the same direction, just not as much now. Just my $0.02

I also saw that one. I've been keeping my eye out for that SPECIAL XJR to replace the one I sold a little while ago. I REALLY miss it. The miles are a bit high for me, but the 100 would be a special car to own.

Me personally, that many miles, and auction environment, I'd pay around 4-6k depending on the car, year, mileage, but ONLY since it's a 100. Otherwise, auction XJR would be 2-4k. That's just where I'M at. On the street, 1-2k more for either...

Beautiful Alfa Romeo you have there... When I was young, my dad used to get random special cars. He had one of the Green Clover leaf Alfa's, also Olds 442 Convert, Mustangs, Camaros, etc... We'd have 4-6 at a time in the front yard. We even had a matching pair of Datsun 1600's in the garage for a while, both white with black racing stripes. He only picked up Super Clean cars, and it was fun to show them off to my friends.

Here she is fueling up for her maiden voyage, 485 mile drive from California to Vegas. Dirty, but ready. It was a superb drive, scenic, smooth and supercharged . And so begins the love affair!

Well done sir and welcome to the exclusive '100' club! Now did you get it at bargain money?

It's beautiful, and I have to admit, a little jealousy is floating around here...

Congratulations, and yes, the Love Affair is JUST beginning. I badly miss my XJR. Don't be depressed if a few little things pop up right away, it seems I cannot avoid a few each time I pick up a new car (switches, lights, trim, leaks, etc...). But, get those fixed, and it's bliss...

If you don't find anything wrong, then you've truly been blessed by the Jaguar Gods.

PS: My XJR had the light tick the whole time I owned it. Never got better, but never got worse. I just read a thread this morning about a guy that had the tick, turned out to be a loose spark plug. Might check that, otherwise, might just be the Jaguar tick...

Wow, great buy! Enjoy it! It is a rare car and if you hold onto it long enough, you will reap the rewards that a limited production performance sedan brings.

Thanks SuperSport. The Olds is by far my most favorite out of the GM A-body cars and the 442 makes it even more so. My mom used to have a 71 Cutlass Coupe with white interior. My father painted it gray it looked fab. I was too busy with the Bimmers back then and sort let that car slip through my fingers. I like the Fairlady in darker colors, including black because the chrome trim shows very well. Both of these cars are great!

I am GREEN with envy!

Me and my impatience,.....I should've waited for something like this. But I NEVER wait,...never. I like the world waiting on me, not the other way around.

Congratulations anyway, but we NEED to know the price!
