Default Buzzing noise on hard acceleration w/ cold engine

What is causing that sound?

Kinda like a zipper rubbing on a sheet of paper noise

Once warm, all is silent. Issue is consistent

Trans pumps? your statement shows no mechanical sympathy for an ageing vehicle mate, maybe let it warm up before kicking it's head in and aid longevity - just sayin'

Hi
If you have a XJR check the EGR pipe could be cracked. I have this problem, after welding the pipe all good.

Don't think my vdp has an egr anything if it is naturally aspirated?

Righteo. The VVT is apparently used to poison the engine like a egr.

?

Fyi, the noise directly correlates with engine speed (rpm)

Okay, just realized today there is no transmission filler or dipstick in the engine bay - is it on the bell housing? If so, is there only a single orifice, or a fill + drain hole?

The procedure for changing the fluid/filter and checking the level has been covered numerous times, and is probably in the DIY sticky here or on the XK8 forum. Certainly you can find it using the Search.

The car has to be level, either on jackstands or a lift and the engine running. When the level is correct fluid will just dribble out of the fill port at the back right side when the fluid temp. is 30-50 deg. C

According to recommended service, does the transmission fluid every need to be changed?

Once in a while, this kind of noise is caused by a loose spark plug. Buzzing. Otherwise, most likely a noisy VVT.

I bet you do! You don't have an EGR. Round black thingies with wires at the front of each cam cover, hard to miss.

Thought that was a distributor cap, lol... Do modern cars still use distributors?

That buzzing is your conscience telling you not to accelerate "hard" until your engine is warmed up. :-)

Most of us don't believe the "sealed for life" claim by Jag on the tranny. Remember "life" to them is until the original warranty runs out.

Service it every 60K or so.

Since you're in NYC, I would bet your mufflers are in pretty bad shape due to rust. Throughout the years being an auto technician, I've come across this before. The metal tubes where they are welded to the mufflers are most likely cracked or the metal baffles in the muffler are cracked. Both of those when cold can flutter, causing the buzzing noise until hot due to heat expansion. When this noise first started, had any work been done recently??

Lol, that was the first thing I was thinking, read through the thread, nope no one mentions it, then bam....Vector...lol
My XJ likes to take things niiiice n easy until she's well warmed up, then she goes!
Try any of that before she's ready and she's just sluggish and uncooperative.

I guess it'd be like coming over to your house and waking you up outta bed, then shouting and screaming at you and asking you to do a 400M sprint or a marathon
So a plus 1 from on "your conscience"
The real noise? Sorry I have no clue
