Thanks - out of interest does that mean you can actually get all of the valve spring pressure off the cam at one point in its rotation?

I'm pretty sure that rotating with a socket via the crank is easier or at least more accurate than "bumping" the starter. I'm sure you can do it that way, but I was able to be satisfied that I had all of the pressure off the cams by carefully rotating via the crank. I even went around a couple of times to make sure it was exactly where I wanted it to be. I could get it exactly where it needed to be this way.

It was not difficult to reach with a 24mm socket and 3" extension. Removing the spark plugs made it very easy to turn. Clockwise only!

YMMV.

It probably is.

But some people have a fine enough touch that they can get it in a few clicks

Turning the crank is easy enough. I would do it manually if I needed to do it again.

Damn dude, you're supposed to spin the motor over until most of the springs have no or little compression. I just did it a couple weeks ago.

I see from tousley ford, a cam for a lincoln LS is only $106. Not sure if they're the same profile though.

She has been running since late October. One of our awesome members, sparkenzap, was extremely generous and gave me a camshaft from an XJR engine. Perfect fit!

I ended up doing the entire timing system at that point (might as well). https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...e-alive-62597/

Reading this thread has increased my awareness of potential issues during the timing tensioner mod. I'm not sure I understand all of it, but, great thread.
