Can I swap 2000 S-Type 4.0L engine into a 99 XJ8
Hi,
Thanks for looking at my post. THe timing belt broke on my 1999 XJ8 (113k miles)and now I need to replace the engine (Two dead cyclnders and who know what else). I found one at a local salvage yard and they said the 2000 S-Type 4.0L engine (37k miles)will swap right into my 1999 XJ8. I have the car currently at a local mechanic waiting to be fixed.
My question is are the two engines the same and will the 2000 S-Type 4.0L engine swap into my 1999 XJ8 without modifications?
Thanks

Hi John,
I know the XJ application very well, but I don't work on S Types. There's a guy in Texas named motorcarman, I believe he had previously written that the camshafts were different. I think the structural sump and oil pan is as well.
How much are you paying for the S Type engine? I might know of some better options.

Too bad you already bought it. You'll have to wait for more info from somebody that knows S Types better. You have an XJ and an XK, or is one of your posts a typo?
Not a typo, I own both. I recently bought an 1998 XK8 and sold the XJ8 to my son (He had it three weeks before the engine problem). The XJ8 engine timing chain broke and two of the cylinders have no compression. The mechanic said it was easier and about as expensive to replace the engine vs try and fix the old one.
stype engine and xj8 engine are NOT intechangeable

Greetings ib,
I'm hoping you can post a little more detail, as the availabilty of good used blocks and heads for 4.0 L engines is sure to be an ongoing problem. I know the crank is interchangeable, I sold an XJ8 crank which a local shop used in the repair of an S motor with a spun rod bearing. Motorcarman says the heads are the same, so long as the cams are swapped as I mentioned.
Mr. Frye, you already know that the swap is not cost effective, even if it is indeed possible. Diamond Auto Parts in Fond du Lac has a 2001 XJ8 engine, 46K miles, for $3345. There is another in Janesville, although the mileage is not listed and the price is higher. If neither of those options will suffice, I have an upgraded 2001 XJ8 engine for a betterdeal. Good luck with whatever course you take.

THanks for the replies. I will be talking with Midwest Auto salvage on Monday to have the engine returned. When I talked to them last week they told me the 4.0L engine was an exact match. WHat is the best place for me to find a replacement engine for the Jaguar? How did you find the two engines listed in your post above? Is a new engine the best course of action after the timing chain broke and compression is 0% in two cyliners? Thanks again to everyone.
sometimes all it needs is new chains.. and maybe a valve or two.. as long as the piston face is good..couple thousand and your good to go.. swapping parts from one engine too another is costly as well..
I agree with "Genius." You won't know until you open the engine and look at the pistons. You do need to watch your used engines. 99 and up should have the VVT's located in the valve covers. You also need to check the number of oil pressure sensors by the oil filters. Most of these cars have two. We have seen a few with only one sensor.
ibjags,
can you clarify about the interchangeability of blocks and bare heads between S Type and AJ27 XJ8/XK8?
If anything tangible is going to come out of this entire discussion, both on this forum and on Jag Lovers, it is that small pieceinformation.I'm not trying to challenge your knowledge, I'm trying to broaden mine. Thanks.
