Can't get it out of Park

On my 2001 XJ8, the first indication that the shifter would not go out of Park, is the "P" would not be illuminated. I changed the brake switch and still had the same problem until I removed the shift console and checked out the PC board connections. I am not sure how your shifter is wired but might want to change the brake switch???

left hand side drivers side fuse panel - check fuse # 7 its a 15 amp fuse - my 2000 was stuck in park and interior lights would not not replaced it - works like a dream if the hear clunk noise by the j-gate then the interlock solenoid is working, thanks to member on the site it was a quick fix on my 2000 VJ8 VDP.
