CEL On, RP, Rough Idle - Code PO354 - Burned Coil Pack
Hi,
I've gotten so much value from this board, and wanted to give a couple of suggestions on fixes I have discovered for CEL, RP, and no-crank/no-start.
1. Buy a cheap code reader. I cannot believe I have owned this car for 6 years and many electronic struggles without one. Easy to use and does a great job pointing you in the right direction. Just get one.
2. General Poor Performance: Triple check all of the vacuum lines/connections. Clean the MAS & Throttle Body. Check/replace spark plugs AND CLEAN OUT ANY OIL/MOISTURE in the plug wells. I found a little oil in several wells, and found that several spark plugs less than finger tight (thank you Jaguar Dealership 3 years ago!).
3. Most recently, after doing all of the above the CEL came on, RP Amber Light on (w/ Rev Limiter). Then car began to run rough at all RPMS. Using my brand new code reader and some code translation from this forum, narrowed the problem down to bad coil pack, A4 cylinder (right bank, by firewall). Pulled the cover and sure enough the coil pack was visibly melted! New coil pack in and runs perfect.
Question: Has anyone ever seen a visibly melted coil pack? What could cause that? I attached a picture...
4. No start/No Crank - this has been described on this forum many times, but I have never seen this solution. Usually people reference the transmission selector sensor, key issues, etc. I've had it to the dealership and a very reputable indy, but since the problem was intermittent it never seemed to go away, and made the car pretty useless as it was so unreliable. By coincidence (and over more than a years time) I found that banging on the relay/fuse box at the front left of the engine bay. Experimented with that and eventually determined that banging on the top of it started the car every time. I pulled all of the relays - no improvement. Swapped locations of all of the relays - no improvement. Finally unbolted the box, unplugged the big connector going into it, cleaned it and its mate with electrical cleaner, put it back together and... fixed. hasn't happened again in 3 months since. I don't know what these relays control and don't care now that the car doesn't hang my wife up any more!
Thanks for all the help over the years!
