Check engine yellow warning light

Hi, I am wondering if anyone has an answer as to why the yellow "check engine" warning light should have come on during normal buzzing about town, in an 2004 X350 XJ-R. I have a 2001 XJ8 which pops up the "engine coolant low" warning light and message when it requires about half a cup of coolant, which seems a bit enthusiastic, but I have got used to it. This is the first time that I have seen anything odd in my XJ-R. I checked the obvious like oil level and coolant level and they are okay, and there doesn't appear to be anything odd in the way the engine is running. Could it be a bit like the XJ8 , and just an oddity ? Perhaps some-one may have come across this and may have an answer.

If your SES or Check Engine light is illuminated, then you have DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) stored in your ECM or computer. You should get your DTC's pulled using a engine analyzer or code reader. You will then understand why the light is on.
As for your low coolant. Search on this forum using "Engine Coolant Low". You will find a few posts. If I remember correctly it can be resolvedwith a new cap or sensor.
There is always a reason for the check engine light to illuminate

If you want for Check engine light stop by autozone and they will read the codes for free. Make sure you write them down and you can google them to see what they are or post them up

Thanks for replys. The XJ8 coolant issue just seems to be the oddity of the V8 3.2 motor. It only needs about half a cupful maybe every 2 -2.5 K miles, just to switch off the "low coolant" warning light.
The yellow "check engine" warning light is on the XJ-R, and I suppose is more worrying. It looks like I will need to get my local dealer to check it.
Many thanks.
