Default Check rear lights

Hello everyone; this morning I noticed a warning saying "check rear lights". So, I went out and saw that the lights were working fine. Could this be due to a sensor malfunction or are the lights about to quit on me soon? Thanks everyone and have a good Tuesday!

Did you check to make sure it isn't a brake light?

One, make sure it isn't a brake light.

Two, unplug both electrical connectors at the tail light and make sure the ground isn't burning up.

Three, if you still haven't figured it out PM me

Well, the rear lights are still working and the sensor came off when I drove the Jag back home the same day the light came on. Perhaps, the cold weather in the morning? Thanks everyone!

Still more likely is the rear tail light harness burning up

or

a failing security module.

How would I know for sure if one of those is happening? Is there an easy fix? If not, would it be where I have to take the Jag to a maintenance shop?

You can check the connectors very easily. Open the boot, remove rear light board by pinching the two chrome tabs and pull the board off. Disconnect the electrical connector, and check for burn marks on the connector itself (where the black wire goes in), and on the light board that holds all the bulbs. There is gray plastic that separates all of the prongs that fit the connector, make sure none are burnt, they will become obviously black and melted. If you find this issue to be present, send me a PM

So, today I found that the passenger side low beam headlight went out. Would that have something to do with the check rear lights warning; even though it's the front? Hopefully the electrical isn't going "out" altogether.

Default check rear lights warning X308 XJ8 2003

I noticed that one rear brake light is staying on- even when the car is turned off and key removed. Also "check rear lights" warning on dash. Strange the warning doesn't specifically mention brake light(s).

Other rear brake light and the center (window) brake light work fine.

I removed the offending bulb so as not to run down the car battery.

ideas? thx, Fred

security control module needs to be sent in for repair or replaced under the fuse box in the trunk. Sent mine to module master's in Idaho took about a week.

It's a typical sylvania/osram bulb with the bright base -- don't get the USA bulb or one form china with the brass base.

All the parts stores sell them. I should know the number by heart -- but I can't think of it at the moment.

The USA bulb has a different wattage and can throw off the bulb sensor as well as corrode the socket.
