Default Common issue - drivers door window

Hi Guys,

As of this morning my driver side window will not open no matter what.

Thinking back over time there has been a few times when it has not opened or closed on the first press, and it has taken a second press but you think because it happens very occasionally it must just be you didn't press the button correctly & think no more of it till it completely packs up.

Is there a stock or common failure that causes this which would be a good starting point?

Many thanks for your thoughts

Is your battery in good health or is it an old battery? The last time you had window problems, was it cold outside or wherever the car lives at? My second thought tells me it's a window switch. My third thought is that on more than one occasion, I've had to remove the door panel, unplug the drivers door ECU and plug it back in. Get the window switch hooked back up, but don't put the door panel back on yet until you know it's working. If it does work again, the problem was that over time the connector to that ECU doesn't have very good contact with the pins inside the module and it simply vibrates enough to have a bad connection. I myself take the ECU out and gently sand the flat pins in it and reconnect it back up.

Hi there - just to add a little info - this car is only really used weekends, so was outside through the recent freeze without any activity.

The other three windows are fine (my children really do not see my window as an issue for them lol) .. when I press to wind the window down you hear a faint click as if the motor is being started, then a very very faint whine for a second then nothing... my battery was replaced a few months ago after failing dead as a dodo halfway through starting her so suspect I am looking at either a dodgy connection just not able to supply the current as you say or a jammed window..

Hopefully I will get some reasonable weather next weekend and can have a look at it and meanwhile I am grateful for any thoughts or leads as to what I am most likely looking at :-)

Next time you go out to the car, start it up an see if the window will work. If not, turn off the car and disconnect the negative battery terminal first and then positive battery terminal. Put the two terminals together for 15 seconds. Put the positive cable back on first and then negative cable on. Yada yada go start the engine again and see if the window works. I'm thinking since it's been cold outside, the battery just may not have had enough to satisfy all the ECU's voltage AND amperage in the car while cranking over.

Today was a mishap day. Someone parked outside my house earlier so nowhere to park. Being somewhat unplugged today I decided to park on the grass verge to unload the weekly shop and yep got her stuck just over the kerb with both back wheels and no grip. Tried the usual rocking and trying to get things under the wheels to get traction but no go. In the end very gently pushed her off the grass verge (now mud) back onto the road using the X-Type which has awd. All this in front of my house and the neighbours grin.. So thought I would try a reset on her to see if it resolved the window.. And it did. Not too sure why only that window was affected but now much much happier than I was earlier today with her stuck on the grass verge .. Thankyou for that advice and a positive event today :-)

Best regards and thanks

So, now all you have to do is wash all the grass and mud off the car and from inside the wheel arches!

Maybe the reason only the drivers window failed, was that after starting the engine, too much power was taken from the battery, and when you pressed the switch the alternator had not had sufficient time to recharge the battery, by the time you had played with it for a min or 2, enough juice had been put back to not effect the others.

Could be.. I seldom open the window to be honest this time of year :-)... Thankfully all sorted now.. And after this afternoons events she has now had a wash outside and hoover inside and I am a happy bunny even if the neighbours may have found my day interesting lol

If nothing else I can now officially say don't park XJs on wet grass and you would be amazed what an X-Type can shift :-)

Many thanks for the responses and help ref the window even if I suspect my day of car shunting will be a subject at the May meet lol

Very best regards
