Default computer going nuts, won't shift out of P new battery.... please advise.

Hello all.

2003 XJ8

put a new alternator in it about a month ago, and was told the battery was going bad. Took it to a battery store and they confirmed it was going bad. Put a new battery in it this morning and it started right up. I didn't notice anything at the time. 5 minutes later I went to move it and noticed the brake light on, the codes were going crazy and the speedo went all the way around. the tachometer is not working either.

any thoughts on fixing this?

serious problem maybe.... ? this has never happened to anyone who has changed a battery before?

I called the local Jag dealer, no clue. I called an import wrench in Raleigh, NC, where my brother in law lives and he is friends with, he thinks that there is too much current running through, maybe a problem with the new alternator/new battery. It has been towed to the local import wrench that put the alternator on.

am I gonna get hosed??? dumb question, I know... but can anyone tell me what it is so I have some ammo before they change the flux capacitor that doesn't need to be changed?

T I A,

Walt

1st. thing I'd do, because it's simple and cheap, is disconnect the battery for a few minutes (make sure you have the radio code to hand) and see what happens on re-connect. You might get lucky. It would seem, judging from previous postings, that Jags. can be a tad fussy about the battery fitted, as far as the various microprocessors are concerned. Might help doing a search on this one. Are you sure the battery is of the right ampere-hours capacity? Is it of quality manufacture? Good luck.
Leedsman.
p.s. For those readers who remember my BIG capacitor across the battery trick for random limp-mode events, so far there have been NO spurious limp-mode events. Fingers crossed...

yah, before doing anything, I agree with leedsman - a hard reset should be in order. I've had battery disconnects (due to audio system projects) lead to some weird electrical phenomenon - lights, alarms, noises, etc. A reset did fix it and put it back normal. Can't hurt.

so after I had it towed to my local wrench, he had it towed to Annapolis Jaguar, and they couldn't figure it out, from what I am told. It runs and drives fine, but none of the gauges work. Jaguar told my wrench that I need a new 'cluster' but it will run fine............. the power locks don't work. the heat doesn't work. I can't tell how fast I am going and I don't know if I am going to run out of gas.

how much is a cluster and what should it cost?

thanks,

Walt

Not sure if these guys can help, but it's worth a shot. I just sent my throttle body in to them. It was cheaper than anything else. They are very timely on e-mails or calls. It helps to have a part number handy.
