Dash & clock light out

Hi all,
I have a 2001 XJ8 and I recently installed an FM modular to my audio system to play my ipod. Immediately after installation my dash and clock lights do not work at night. I think I burnt a fuse during installation. I've check the fuse box under the hood and in the trunk but everything seems fine. Is there a fuse box inside the car too?
The STRANGE
part is that the dash lights still come ON when I turn the switch one click up from Off. But it goes off when I switch the head lights on anything beyond one click up from off. Any ideas?
Any suggestion would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Tuan

I could be wrong, as I did not get any sleep last night.

SuperSport: thanks for the tip. However, I forgot to mention I did also check the dimmer knob and it didn't solve the issue.
to clarify the dash light actually turns ON when the switch is in the OFF position. and turns off when I turn it on to any of the 3 light options.
I'm am totally confused. help please!

Ok, I just went out to my car to verify what I was thinking.
If the dimmer knob is turned all the way down, you will have dash lights on with headlight switch off. Once you turn your headlight switch to any other position, your dash lights will go out.
Since that's how it works in my car, I would suggest you check if the dimmer fuse is good, then verify that your dimmer switch is operating correctly. If it's ok, then trace the wiring from there. I've included the fuse location for easy diagnostics.
See attached images. To get to the fuse, pull the carpeted heelboard away from the left back seat, and towards the front seat. You will find fuses there (Fuses are found under both side heelboards for future reference, notice second image).
Like I say, I get the exact results you describe when the dimmer knob is rolled all the way to dim.
Good luck, and I hope this somehow helps.

Wow! is all I can say. You're awesome for looking into this and the diagrams were perfect. I was able to locate the problem in the fuse box in the back seat foot board on the driver side.
The burn out is most likely caused from my installation of the FM Modulator which i connected to some wires I found inside the arm console. I guess I need to find another location to connect those two wires (ground and positive). I replaced the fuse and turned on my FM Modulator and POOF. fuse burnt again. So at least I know where to look now
Thanks again Supersport. Your help is much appreciated!

As a general rule of thumb you should run the shortest possible ground wire from the FM Modulator to the nearest steel body part or ground source. Also, you should run your power wire (with inline fuse) to the rear heel board fuse box. try the left hand heel board fuse box, fuse No. 17. It's a 10 amp accessory fuse. That would be a good choice and should switch off and on with the ignition key. Another possible source would be fuse No.9. That is the radio/cassette source. This should provide power when the radio is on.
No problem at all. Glad it helped. I don't know if you still have the manuals with your car or not, but the image I sent you came from the Free downloadable manuals directly from the Jaguar Website. They can be found here:
http://www.jaguarusa.com/us/en/owner...manuals/xj.htm
The manuals are only available for 2000-2008, but I have yet to find an issue that the 2000 manual does not cover on my '99 XJR.
The fuse locations are in the "Jaguar_XJ_2000_Vehicle_Care_Handbook". This has been very handy seeing as how there are roughly 10,000 fuses in this car (give or take a few).
I've never seen so many fuses in a vehicle...
And thanks to NorCalDiesel, you now know where to "safely" connect.
Good luck, and enjoy your Jag.

I'm experiencing a similar problem from my x300; everything was fine until the car got serviced, and now the dashboard lights don't work.
I've checked the fuse in the box under the rear-left passenger seat, and that seems fine (the 5amp one), but would like to cross-reference against the pics in an earlier post (but can't as I'm a noob).
Can it be the dimmer unit?
Suggestions much appreciated.
