Default Differences btwn early (1997-2002.5) and late (2002.5-2003) differentials?

Hi, my 2002 XJR lunched her diff a few weeks ago. I have the diff out, and am looking for a replacement. One of the salvage yards I called said since my 2002 is after the VIN# break, it has a different part number for the diff than the early X308's. I called my local dealer and he verified that the later VINs have a different part number diff, but neither of them could tell me what might be different.

Does anyone know what the differences (if any) are? I *thought* all years and trims used the same 3.06 open diff?

I've purchased 2 used diffs so far; one came locked up, and the next was a 2001 and not a 2003 I paid for, and was so trashed it was beyond funny. Like you can move the input shaft all over the place the bearings are so far gone, and the output shafts will only rotate in one direction, or the gears bind up from the slop.

Anyone know of a honest place to pick up a used diff without paying a small fortune?

Thanks,

Mike

You can try this (I used it to get an engine for my girls car)... Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market
You can even narrow it down to your region. Put in the info, you'll get offers via email, then find the best price. Each offer I received when I got the engine had a warranty and all had the mileage listed along with contact info so you can call beforehand or if you have an issue.
Also, have you tried The Marketplace on the top of the page? Lots of members parting out cars that were wrecked or blew motors.

I looked at carp-part.com originally, then bought a diff off eBay. My friend has used car-part.com with success before, buying a transmission for a Volvo wagon.

I went ahead and bought a diff from car-part.com; we'll see how it works out next week. They still have to take the diff off the car yet, so won't ship till later this week or early next.

The bigger question was if you could install an early (pre-2002.5) diff in the later cars. I went ahead and got a 2003 diff just to be sure it wasn't an issue.

Thanks for the input, I appreciate it.

Mike

Colonel, that came out of an XK8. You would need to install the pinion stub from an XJ8.

That is correct. I have a XJ8/XJR pinion on the shelf behind it.

I recently replaced a diff for a friend and while in the process of looking for a donor I had 3 fall into my lap. I pulled one apart to inspect/for parts but still have two full ones left. This one with XK pinion and another full rear end with the XJ pinion. and I need them all to go....

I've already committed to a 3rd diff from a vendor. Should be here next week; we'll see how it pans out.

Thanks for the offer though.

I do need a couple other parts also, like both rear outer door handles have their arms for the linkage broken off, so I'd like a black pair of handles (if I get the damn car running with a diff again first, lol).

Default Pinion Stub?

Question on this- what do you mean by "install the pinion stub"?

From what I have seen, XJ8/XJR diffs use the 3 bolt rubber coupling back there with a central stub sticking forward to locate the center of the driveshaft. The XK8 units have a 4 bolt flange that takes a older style 4 bolt flange on the rear of the driveshaft (and no central pin- at least not on the 97 or 98 cars I've seen). The pic here seems to be an XK8 flange on an XJ8/XJR pinion, no???

The diff pictured above is out of an XK8. If he intends to install it in an XJ8/R model, then he would need to remove that 4 bolt flange and get a 3 bolt flange installed to make it work for that sedan.

Hope this helps. If not, maybe I misunderstood.

Default Interesting....

I have never seen an XK8 diff that had the central stub on it and the 4 bolt flange as well. Have you actually seen one of these on an XK8 unit elsewhere? Look at some of the diffs on Ebay that are listed for 97-02 XK8's- item numbers are

262813379064 , 272789519604, 131912445304 , (and see the attached pic)

All of them have the 4 bolt flange but none have that protruding pin. I think something is funny with this particular unit shown in the post- it's not right. There's no way an XK8 driveshaft would bolt onto that diff. I think what we have there is an XJ8/XJR diff with an XK8 flange on the front

My original question was more though about what you said in an earlier post: "install the pinion stub"

Can you explain what you meant by that?

It was probably a poor choice of words on my behalf. What I meant was, remove the 4 bolt flange and install the 3 bolt flange. I just referred to it as a stub.

You might be right about the peg sticking out that it could be an XJ8 diff with a XK8 4 bolt flange on it.
