Default Dodgy brakes

There is an interesting article in the May 2010 edition of Car & Driver. It seems that a Nissan 370Z had relatively poor brake performance.
They attributed this to Akebono low dust/noise pads, DOT 3 brake fluids and lack of brake cooling ducts.
Guess what, our stock XJs have none of the above features or absences.
Just another example of the quiet quality of the Jag!

I have to say, for as heavy as this car is, it is one of the best I've driven as far as braking goes. Especially considering it's weight. I've had to panic stop a few times and it's dead center, and the Antilock works superb. I've had some cars where the Antilock felt like it didn't quite operate as it should have, (would have prefered manual braking that I control).

"Poor performance" in what respects? Stopping distance? Fade resistance?

I ask because I am using Akebono pads and love 'em. I'll admit, though, that my driving style, while somewhat aggressive, is hardly grueling in nature.

My X300/XJR has brake cooling ducts for the fronts. Not sure about the '308s.

Cheers

Agreed.

Some ABS systems of a few years ago were awful. Darn near any hard stop became an "ABS event". I think most, if not all, manufacturers have things pretty well dialed in these days, allowing ABS to be a help rather than a hinderance.

Hi Doug,

The x308s have brake ducts and higher boiling point DOT 4 brake fluid.

The Akebono pads failed catastrophically after a few laps on the track. Most other sporty cars lasted significantly longer and gave better warning of failure.

The Nissan people were not fussed, the pads were chosen for low dust/noise primarily! Ferodo pads did improve matters.

I wonder if Akebono pads are ECE R90 (Regulation 90) compliant? I.e., are they within +/- 15% of OEM pads for braking performance?
