Default door check frustration

bought a door check off ebay. Today I removed the old one, and while test fitting, discovered the new arm is not in the extended position and won't reach the connector on the pillar. I've tried and tried to get it to extend - no luck.
Help, please !

A vise and a BFH always does SOMETHING!!!!!!!!!! (even if it's wrong)

That is what I would have done.

I don't know about the hammer, but I'd try putting it in a vise (in a way that doesn't pinch it off of course), then put a screwdriver through the arm and PULL. Maybe use a lever against the screwdriver and vise if necessary. But leave the hammer for fitting General Motors parts.

Default doorcheck

It turned that I had both a broken door check and damaged metal. A couple of washers perked it right up and now all is well !
