Default Dreaded trans. issues : P1722,

Car just recently started groaning going from park to reverse, today I noticed on harder braking the downshift seemed to grab/catch. Then from a complete stop it stumbled, then wouldn't move whilest in drive & threw "gearbox fault" which turned out to be P1722. It was only a short return drive, maybe 500 yards from my house but it seemed to be stuck in 1st gear.

PO said the A-Drum had been replaced & the paperwork shows that was less than 7,000 miles ago.

All this while I was planning on changing the trans. fluid next week.

It may be a selector switch problem or even low fluid. Since you're going to change the fluid, drop the pan ans see what's on the magnets. But also update the pressure valve, either with the ZF or transgo valve.

Yes I have hope it's that, bright side is that I only drove it for 2-3 minutes after the drama. So if the A-drum did go again, it hasn't had time to likely foul the whole system.

I had this fault and it was because my fluid was low due to my engine replacement. It felt like a slipping clutch and it was shifting funny. I only had to put in about a quart or less for it to feel completely normal and fix the problem. I used the trans. dip stick you have to buy separately

There is a after market dipstick which may still be available. Try doing a search of this and the Xk8 (X100) forum. But if the transmission doesn't leak, checking the fluid level by the factory method should be a one time exercise.

Well there's a respected independent trans. shop, not even 2 blocks away from my house. I just spoke with him & he's well familiar w/ the ZF. Guess I'll bite the bullet & have it towed in there this week. I feel if my A-drum did bite the dust again, it's a good candidate for just replacing it as opposed to a complete rebuild. I feel this way because it was driven less than 500 yards/2-3 minutes from the event happening. Anyway we shall see lol, I really will grimace if I have to spend 2-3K+ for a new tranny or extensive rebuild though.

Current game plan : Tow in for diagnostics, then pick the collective brain here as on how to proceed.

It would be so lovely if it's just low fluid.

Transmission shop called , the car's ready ! The A-drum had given away & it was totally rebuilt w/ the forged upgrade & pressure regulator valve. Total cost $2,200, now I know for sure all these cars' major "hot spots"(tensioners,A-drum,t-stat housing, etc.) have been addressed in mine, so I have that piece of mind going forward !
