Question Ecm change

Question of the day. Is any one aware if any programming is required when changing out the engine control module. My 1998 XJ8 4.0L unit had fryed (think it got water in it, since all circuits at that locating check out ok) I got a used unit with same numbers, and now it wont start. Old one would allow it to run, but very badly. thanks for any help.

You replaced it with a good used with the same numbers... AND THE LAST 3 DIGITS?????

I don't know if an incorrect last 3 digit suffix will keep the engine from starting because I have never tried it.

I think I had to perform an immobilization setup on X308 with a replacement ECM. The car would stall at times and we finally figured out that the ECM was overheating and shutting down. You could NOT put your hand on the module because it got so hot. I replaced the ECM and the engine did not start until I did an immobilization setup.

The car was finally fixed after several months of 'hair pulling' and Jaguar Tech Rep involvement.

Here is the VCATS info

Hi, motorcarman can you detail how you did the immobilization setup? I am having an issue very similar to what you have described and I can't seem to find my way out of it. I have a replacement ECM with exact same part # and a dealer IDS tool.

Immobilization setup is in the SETUP AND CONFIGURATION tab (the car with the wrench).
Follow the on-screen instructions. It should only take a few seconds to perform and the screen will confirm that the procedure is complete.
