Default Engine cleaning

What is the best way to clean the engine in my 2005 XJ?

1. don't (too much risk of causing faults)
2. avoid water (see #1)
3. don't (see #1)

Not what you want to hear I'm sure, but really: don't.

If you do, avoid moving any wiring, hoses, etc. Do not use water. Do not spray anything. Etc.

Dry wipe. No water. I used brake cleaner and a brush ln my V12. My AJV8 was always clean, apart from aluminium corrosion.
