Question What is this plastic airshaft? It fell out from under engine/wheel-well

See attached photo plz - this plastic airshaft-looking thing fell out from the drivers-side (USA) wheel-well area of the engine bay, near the bottom of the car. What is it? Do I need to put it back?

A guess would say this redirects air from the front-grill-area to the wheel arch to cool the brakes?

You're right. It is a cooling duct. It is only clipped. I lost one a while ago...

Brake cooling duct, there is one on each side, re-secure with screws on both sides!

One of mine was missing when I bought my XJR.

There is still an empty air shaft where it was - so presumably if I don't bother replacing it, I'll never know the difference?

Um, the factory put it there for a reason: to cool the front brakes, your call.

I zip tied the under tray, but didn't exactly see how the ducts were supposed to be attached. I was on my back with no ramp or jack lol.

one end snaps in near the grill intake and the other was connected with those disposable snaps. I like the black zip tie look. More racer inspired LOL jk.

This takes me back... years ago I had the same thing happen, the vent fell out at speed, and made a horrible noise against the tire before finally being spat out onto the road!

There are two pieces, the duct, and an end cap that sits inside the wheel well. You should be able to fit the duct, then secure the end cap with cable ties. That's how mine is held in.

While you're there, wouldn't hurt to put a cable tie around the vent on the other side too, just in case it decides to come loose in the future.

Yeah I got caught in a torrential rain deluge on a side street that flooded. It moved my whole splash guard & knocked my ducts loose. I didn't notice anything until I parallel parked & heard a good awful crunch " I was like WTH did I hit ?!" foolishly doubting my supreme parallel parking skills lol.

For now the tray/guard's clip tied in place & the loose duct I removed until I can put it up in the air & get a better grasp on schematics.

Mine have short wood screws going thru the wheel well cap and duct to hold them in place. Looks ugly if you're sticking your head in the wheel well, but they're never going to fall out unless I want them to.

FYI, it is a year later, I never reinstalled it and nothing bad has happened, lol - the duct is entirely superfluous.

Good to know, as my duct removed & in waiting will likely reside there for who knows how long lol.

Look at post #6 "the "brake-cooling-ducts-resolved" thread:

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...e2/#post552917

It has the parts diagram and part numbers of the front wheelarch liner and the brake cooling duct parts

Here is the full weblink:

Ok I found the duct/HNC4469AF my question is will my cooling pipe snap back in once I have the duct or do I need separate fasteners or zip ties.

Thanks !

IIRC, it is held in place with short, phillips head, black, coarse thread screws on both sides.
