Engine Knock
#21
No lifters, overhead cams.
While there were a reported 21 different part numbers within the evolution of the tensioners there are really only 3 major classes. The early plastic tensioners started out white but stained a red-orange with heat and oil. The revised tensioners will be found red-orange also but with a spring installed above the tensioner body pushing on the 'shoe' pressing on the chain. The metal bodied tensioners are just that, metal.

I had the same thing a few years back at 80k miles. It would knock in the morning, and go away after a few seconds. Eventually however, it knocked randomly during the day as I drove around. Sounded like a rod knock but lighter, and it didn't necessarily correspond with the exact engine speed. It did go faster as the revs went faster, but wasn't exactly on time. My mech replaced all the tensioners and all has been good since. (near 160k miles now)
160K AWESOME!!!!
