When the bonnett is lifted , i can hear a consistant ticking noise from the middle of the engine on my 2000 xjr...sounds like an old chevy with a torn plug wire arching....is this normal??? any ideas?? Car performs just fine!!

Obviously it is hard todiagnose a ticking noise through the internet, but two POSSIBILITES-
1) a serpentine belt noise- find it with a white paint spot and watch / listen as it runs.
2) On this engine, it is always a possibility of a timing chain- Search the archives and then decide what to do and do it! nuff said.
